Insurance Rant

Post by goose » Wed Jun 22, 2011 11:34 am

Ok am a 36 yr old bloke, with only 3 yrs NCB, no claims, no accidents, & no points in 5+ yrs, car is garaged, used for social and commuting, milltek exhaust, Reading postcode RG4.. and the cheapest I've been quoted so far is £1,166.45 from Admiral :dung:

i do really like my B7 S4, but this... and the fuel, and the road tax, oil, tyres etc. are starting to get to me

maybe i should just get an RS4 or a 996 C4S... something i REALLY want, and then i wouldnt mind so much lol :jump_clap:

anyone know any specialists i could try?

That premium sound expensive for an RS4 never mind an S4!
Keep the car on the driveway (not garage) and add some named drivers to the policy (wife, mother etc). This will usually reduce your premium.

Both of my last cars I've added the missus as a named driver and it's dropped the premium down considerably - even though she hasn't driven since passing her test in 2001!

I got mine (B6 S4) to a little over £400 with More Than. I'm 32 but have full NCB (in/near Southampton).

All the other quotes I got at the time were over £100 more though.

Have you spoken to Sky Insurance to go through a quotation?

I got my insurance through Sky last year, and they were the cheapest by quite a way. I'm 30, 5 years NCB, live in Somerset, car parked on the street. Mine was about £620-£650 ish. Admiral and the like were loads more, and Adrian Flux was a couple of hundred more.

I'd give them a call. It was quite nice to have phones answered by people who seem to know what they're talking about too, rather than call centre drones!

With insurance you get what you pay for, if you opt for a cheap premium then you can pretty much guarantee the claims service wil be poor. If you don't make a claim then you're on a winner but if it all goes wrong and your insurer is being a PITA then was it worth the money?

Personally I would rather pay a bit more for decent service when you need them most, the more brokers, etc between you and the insurer the more protracted and painful the claims process will be i.e. longer to get the claim sorted out.

Every company I've ever been with has appeared competent until there's an accident. Then they all fail miserably.

I was unfortunate enough to be hit by two fools within the space of a couple of weeks when with Adrian Flux, who opened two claims on my behalf even when I told them the third parties' insurers would be dealing with it all. When I tried to move insurers months later they delayed it for weeks and it turned out they'd left these claims open and ignored.

They only good service I had was with Keith Michaels broker; they managed to get my NCB back when Privilege refused to hand it over after I left them when they stitched me up on a non-fault (the third party was doing about 60 in a 30 and tried to overtake me as I turned right; they didn't tell me for months that he was claiming I pulled out in front of him from a side-road and he'd swerved to avoid me. Why would he swerve to the right when I was coming from the right?!?! Dicks).

I was hesitant before taking out the cover with More Than since it was so low but the wife remarked that I've never had good service whatever I've paid so I might as well get a cheap premium.

Yeah, I figured that all of the other insurers I've been with have been crap, so I might as well go through a broker, who (in my experience thus far) seems to know what they're talking about and they're responsive on the forums. My thinking was that even if the insurer who provides the policy is crap, Sky will be there to do the running around for me, as opposed to me having to do it if I was with one of the budget insurers direct, like elephant/admiral etc.

I have used A-plan (thatcham branch) for the last 5 or 6 years. Always been very competitive & also very helpful & efficient the 1 time I had to make a claim.

I'm with sky on my S4, but the wife is with Audi insurance for the A4 (B8), and they were considerably cheaper than anyone else. Might be worth trying them too.

+1 for More Than (and adding female driver who will never use the car). £426. Admiral are quite competetive this year (insured 2nd vehicle with them - make sure you don't pay Monthly as this hikes up premiums considerably).
