Just had a 1k mile round trip to Cornwall and on my way back, the S4 flagged up a check oil light.
I promptly pulled into the next services around Reading and checked the oil. Seemed ok, albeit not cooled down, it had stood for 15 mins and the level was between the marks, so drove home with light on thinking it might be a faulty sensor.
Anyhow, I got home (washed the car) and then checked the oil again once it had time to cool down fully. However, this time the oil was off the bottom mark (not the stick, just the bottom mark) so I topped up the oil with around 750ml.
This then bought the level bang on the top mark on the dipstick.
So, I was (still am) a little worried that I ran the car low on oil, but I think I'm worrying about nothing.
a) the top up only needed 750ml of oil
b) the engine holds 8.5 litres, so was really only 10% down on what it should have been.
Has anybody else experience of this?
Thanks
Matt

Re: Check oil light....but not very low
I had a similar experience about 1 month ago whilst returning to the Vaterland. Check the oil at Dover. OK. After about 300 miles the yellow light came on. Pulled over and the oil was at the min mark. Topped it up with some oil, about half a litre, and drove on only for the light to come back on after about 20 miles. Pulled over with visions of euros billowing out of my pocket, checked the oil and it had not moved. Switched the car back on......Light went out. This happened once more. Very strange.
Maybe its a temperamental sensor....
