Tensioner Rattle Reduction on Startup
I did an oil change at the weekend from longlife to the Opie Oils recommendation of Fuchs Pro S 5w-40 (which is pretty much the same as the Silkolene Pro S I used on my Impreza).
After the change I started the engine, drove home and, later that day (the next time I started it) there was a dramatic difference - the rattle is much quieter and much shorter and the engine starts and calms down to idle much faster too.
It's been that way every cold start since Saturday so it's all good by the look of things.
It's a shame it does it all really as the engine sounds really nice when you start it when warmish.

I may give this a go. I was going to try Edge 5w40 but this looks even better.

They had it on offer when I bought it a couple of weeks ago but it's gone up a few pounds since:xyber wrote:I may give this a go. I was going to try Edge 5w40 but this looks even better.

The advice from Tim at Opie Oils:
"As you are not intending on staying on a long life schedule and are out of warranty, there's no real point on sticking with a VW spec oil. A very good choice for that engine is the Fuchs Pro S either in 5w-30 or 5w-40...The 5w-30 is normally enough to keep the timing chain quiet due to the ester content, but go for the 5w-40 if you want to be sure."

Yeah I saw the ad but new bedroom furniture was needed unfortunately. I've only done 3.5k since the last change so I put it off a month

Same grade as VW's Quantum Platinum which had the same effect on my S4

I've been experimenting a little with this a little and I have a solution, although I don't know if the solution is damaging to the starter motor at all? Basically when you start the car and the engine fires, I find if I keep the key turned for literally half a second longer after the engine has fired there is no rattle at all. Don't get me wrong I'm not talking about 2 or 3 seconds, just a tiny bit more than feels natural when starting the car.
Does this work for anyone else? Do you think this will damage anything, if so I'll stop doing it?

I've just this evening changed to fuchs pro s 5w40 and put in a new fuel filter. No start up rattle at all!!! (for now anyway) and it feels abit more pokey, mid-range with must be the fuel filter. The dregs in the old one looked like tea

I have used this for the last 3 years since Guy at Opie recommended it. Its ester based oil and has clinging properties in it apparantly. I change the oil myself every 4k or so, then every 2 years have it serviced at Audi and supply this oil to be put in. They seem fine with that.
It significantly reduces the rattle although its still there, its not as loud perhaps. It still grinds my gears though, every bloody day!!! And I still maintain that a car like this should not have this 'characteristic'. Be interesting to hear if one ever fails as a result.
