S4 Towbar

Post by dantheman » Wed Sep 02, 2009 11:38 am

Hi, going to be getting a tow bar fitted to my S4.

I do realise this is not advised by Audi due to cooling issues, but...

My question is - Has anyone had this done? if do, were standard Audi parts used for the electrics? does anyone have part numbers (just for ref)

The guy who is doing the electrics for me works for Audi and his only concern is if it will interfere withe the ESP program, wiring is standard through the range but...

Thanks in advance

Danny

Surley somebody has a B6 S4 with a tow bar?!

Just need to know if there were any issues with the wiring, dash lights etc..

Any info would be great...

Thanks

Looks like nobody has fitted a tow bar to their S4, personally I would not have thought it would be any different from a standard B6/B7 vehicle. Why would it affect the stability programme?

Dan, I replied and there were several posts and info on this subject a couple of years ago; I'm sure its easy to find using a search on "towbar"

I recall that was something to do with oil cooling, possibly that the S4 oil cooler operation is marginal and if loaded (ie towing a heavy load) then I guess Audi believe that the oil cooling system is working that much harder and exceeds its limitations (I dont know this; but remember seeing some posts that suggested this was the reason). I think we concluded that towing a bike rack would not be a problem !

Never heard of any relationship with the stability programme though (unless its somehow based on caravan chinese whispers....)

If the oil cooling system is marginal then bloody cheap skates. Where would you put an oil cooler, it's kinda busy under the bonnet. What do they do in the RS4?

There is an oil cooler down the side of the engine that does have a tendancy to go. I had my one replaced just before I bought the car.

I hope your initial enquiry is for towing something other than a Caravan! Jet skis, an old classic motor bike or a hot tub trailer full of Hawaiian Tropic girls are all viable options. However, if I pass you towing a 24ft deluxe 3 berth caravan doing 20mph with a two mile tail back behind you, I will be forced to sell my own S4 in shame!

I hope you do sort your problem with help from RS246 members and if you do have a mobile hot tub trailer, I'll PM my number for when you if the girls need an oil-up boy.

Good luck.

Thanks to all, why no caravan elmo?! if they canna get past that's not my problem..!!?? Twill be towing bike trailer so relax...

Was just trying to find out if we were going to run into any issues with the electrics on the S4, with it not being recommended for towing by Audi that's all. Once it's on will do in info post here with findings/issues.

Good stuff & thanks again

I also am looking for a tow bar.. any links or names of companies that have done this before would be much appreciated..

p.s. it would be for towing a race car to sprint and hill climb venues....

If I can sort this out I wont need to buy a bloody transit..

can be done guys, in SA have seen many S4's with tow bars as well as C5 RS6's with tow bars, although there is a lot of bad press about cooling, undue strains on the quatro and sports suspension....am no expert tho all i know is it can be done
