B6 S4 Drone/whine - Standard Car, no mods

Post by arrow » Fri Jun 25, 2010 3:14 pm

Hi all,

I have just taken delivery of an '04 Dolphin Gray beaut.
She has really been loved and the paint and leather are immaculate, with 84kms/53miles on the clock

I am not used to the power and all the sounds yet, but one thing that does concern me is that there is a whine when i drive her. THe sounds is quite similar to the sound a car makes when there are no suppressor on the HT leads and there is radio interferance. BUT, this car has that sound when the radio is OFF

By no means is it intrusive or loud. e.g. when the window is down and i am driving it is hardly audible at all, BUT its all new and i want to make sure its not a wheel bearing or anything like that. it could just be the noise the quattro makes so any input would be appreciated.

PS i would pop into MRC or unit20, but i live in South Africa and i dont want to driver her up the continent with that noise just yet

Whine is normal. It is due to the chains being at the back of the engine and that is right next to the passenger bulkhead. The drone is a natural occurence of V8's this can be altered with a change(s) to the exhaust set up. I.e. H or X pipe

As BlingBling said above. The whine is an S4 trait because of the chain drive. Completely normal.
