Coolant temp sensor replaced today on my B7

Post by neckarsulm » Thu May 06, 2010 9:24 pm

On Sunday I started my car up when it was part warm and the 'COOLANT' warning appeared on the DIS and the fans were running on high speed.
I checked the levels and all OK so I drove the 30 miles home and VAG COM'd it.
Came up with "Coolant temp sensor, signal too high".
Gauge never showed overheating but the sensor is a 4 wire/two circuit device and the other circuit (to the ECU and the DIS) must have been the one playing up, this has a backup for the radiator thermo switch so even if the rad switch doesn't read hot because it could be faulty, if the coolant temp sensor reads hot the fans come on.
So I looked where the sensor was, not nice, right at back of engine pointing towards bulkhead, hidden by loom, prob worst location I have seen on a VAG car ever.
I used a set of right angle headed pliers to get the retaining clip out from the old sensor being very careful not to drop them or the clip.
The old sensor came out OK, the seal stayed in so got that out and eventually got new one in, lost around 2 litres of coolant in the process.
Dropped the old sensor down the back of the engine but thankfully it landed in the floor.
Took about an hour all in so any garage that quotes an hour plus part is not taking the mick.
