just read thread on timing chain rattle, mine does that awful, knock
for a second or two when cold , there seems to be a conflict on what
needs doing and what actually cures it, mines on 65000 miles and
due a service are there any musts that need to be done, and what
oil recommended and plugs etc works well for the s4 any advice

Take it off the two yearly 19k service interval and put it on a yearly service plan. Use the standard long life oil (VW504.00) but replace it more frequently.
