Clutch and flywheel, urgent

Post by 1781cc » Wed Jan 06, 2010 10:24 pm

Ok, major dilema now... The <beep> I am having with this car!!!

Anyway, metal scrapping noise and vibration through the rootwell, really bad deep sound when revving, clearly transmission, engine is perfect.

Suspected flywheel, which turns out is dual mass and costs £600 for the part alone, clutch kit is 280, all fitted... Wait for it... £1182 from Mr Clutch, using genuine fitment parts.

7 hour job apparently!

Is price right? Is this a common or know fault? Mines a manual saloon B6, 90k miles.

Please advise, I am stressing like a Mofo post Xmas with this kinda outlay, buy I won't give up on the car.

From a post by infrasilver about clutch slip, estimate from Audi for clutch and flywheel approx £1700 so £1200 from Mr. Clutch is definitely cheaper, link below - see last post.

The dual mass flywheels are everywhere and really can only be considered as an un-mitigated disaster for the automotive industry, they fail a lot earlier in diesels where the torque levels are very high.

Hope this helps

I have been told by various places it is listed as a 10 hour job. I was quoted £795 by by an independant clutch specialist not including the Dual Mass Flywheel as mine was only replaced 3 month ago I am hoping it is still OK. No vibration in mine so clutch kit only hopefully. I'm thinking of doing it myself when I get the time as I am also short of cash at the moment.
Parts from eclutch.co.uk i have been quoted are clutch kit £145.52 delivered and put another £505 for the DMF too. But I assume these are not genuine parts.

I have been quoted by Mr Clutch today £1550 to do the flywheel and clutch kit. Bit of a difference than what you were quoted from the same company. I do know where there is a used low mileage flywheel and clutch for about £150. But this would probably mean a DIY job unless you could get someone to fit it, this would be a cheaper option though.

Hi infrasilver, thanks for the updates, I ended up biting the bullet and dropping it into Mr Clutch, got it back the next day all working fine. although difficult to find problems when were all pottering around at 30mph in the snow.

I cost me £1162 in the end because I used the £20 discount voucher off their site... evey penny counts at that amount.

I would suggest if you are close to Milton Keynes, maybe book it into that one. They seemed ok and turned it around fast.

Thanks for the links and info Pete!

Glad you've got it sorted and managed to save some money compared to Audi prices. Did you get a chance to look at the bits that came out to see what was damaged?

I know its a lot of money to shell out but at least you have got it sorted. I have booked mine in for a new clutch on the 18th at £451 not including the flywheel. I just hope the flywheel is OK now.

£451 isn't bad at all!

The only thing about mine is that I haven't been able to test it properly because of all the snow and sliding around all over the place, but I am driving up to Manchester today for the week and will see how it runs on the trip. Haven't taken her over 3000 rpm yet.

Seems a little more juddery in higher gears at low revs at the moment, but I guess the clutch may need tweaking. one of the plus points with Mr Clutch is that theey give you 4 inspections included, once every 500 miles to check its ok. that ties in with 12 months warranty on the flywheel and 24 months on the clutch.

Not bad IMO
