Gutted down pipes?

Post by chunky79 » Tue May 12, 2009 8:09 pm

Has anyone gutted the down pipe's on thier car?
I was wondering what type of job it is to do and is anything to be wary of?

It is a fairly big job but íf you are mechanicallly minded and appropriately skilled, have the right tools and can use a mig welder then it can be a DIY job.

This links is a guide to downpipe removal for starters. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthrea ... t=downpipe

I also have, somewhere, another guide on gutting the cats and repositioning the secondary o2 sensor. I will try and dig it out later and post a link

Nice find, cheers. If you can find the other write up that would be superb. Might have a bash at doing this in the summer.

A good thread discussing downpipe gains and various exhast configurations etc.
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthrea ... PER+Thread

Thread giving point by point instructions to gutting
http://audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14303

Another gutting thread but with pretty pictures
http://audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14303

Both gutting guides are NOT for a B6 but a little lateral thinking and a procedure for the B6 can be devised.

Another guide for the B5 S4.

I dont have gutted pipes but the pre cat have been removed. I occasionally get CEL due to me not relocating the secondary o2 sensor to the rear of the main cat. This will get done in the coming weeks. CEL eliminators can be used too but I have no idea where to get them from. The difference in performance is very noticeable.

What is CEL? Do you know if gutting them will make it fail the MOT?

CEL = Check Engine Light.

As already stated my car has no pre-cats and passed its MOT emissions test in March. It took several attempts. Although the tester said it was due to not being able to hold 2500rpm, probably due to the remap. Also my car has 200 cell hi flow main cats.

The important thing with the emissions test is to ensure the cats are very hot. That is when they are most efficient.

FYI: If I had come across gutting and the downpipes thread on audizine earlier I would not have gone for either downpipes and ho flow cats. I would have gutted the oem cats, kept the main cats and added a catback.

No figures. The car feels so much better than stock. Not totally convinced with RR. I will do 0-60 & 1/4 mile logs, one day, and calculate the figure from the times
