Exhaust note

Post by Greengoblin » Mon Jan 05, 2009 2:00 pm

Hi all,

this is going to sound a bit "boy racer-ish", and at my age I should really know better, but, I really would like to make the most of that beautiful sound my car makes.

I have looked at the miltek site but don't understand the differences between "resonated" and "non-resonated", or really what I need for my car, its got enough performance for me, I'd just like it to sound a bit "raspier".

What do you reckon I need to do?

It depends on how "loud" you want the thing. A non-resonated cat back will be louder than a resonated cat back. Both are louder than the standard zausts.

A milltek will be perfect for you. The only thing is on the RS6 the turbo's take out some of the noise from the engine. The resonated cat back system has mid silencers in it, where as the non-resonated has straight through pipes in the middle. I think you may be best going for a resonated one if you are slightly worried about it being too loud for you. You could always change the centre sections at a later date if you wanted to.
We sell the cat back system at £710.23 inc VAT (10% off Milltek retail prices) and are currently offering free fitting on any milltek cat back exhaust system.

Most S4 owners do go for the resonated system.

Thanks for all the replies, certainly food for thought. I think I'm leaning towards the resonated system (its the middle aged man inside). :)

Looks like I may well treat the car this summer, on a side note, is this car worth re-mapping?

When i looked into doing this MRC suggested a re-map to make the most of the better flow from the exhaust (full system). They also said the downpipe's could be modified too for best results.

Sorry to jump in, I've just started looking at B6 S4 cabs and i'm interested in exhaust options.
What is the best to go for if you want out and out 'nascar/corvette' v8 howl?
Is it possible to get the S4 to sound like a wounded tiger? :rocker:
Assume non resonated cat back is the start point!

I had the Milltek Catback resonated and the sound was definitely improved over standard, yet it was still missing something. I had the sport cats downpipes installed a couple of months ago and now it sounds awesome giving it a bit of welly and is definitely faster also. This is pretty much how mine sounds now:

That sounds great, how much difference is there between resontated and non-resontated?
Are the down pipes mainly a performance improvement rather than noise?

I have never heard a non-resonated to compare, but pootling around town the resonated isn't that much louder which was important to me with kids in the car.. Since fitting the downpipes, the car is noticably louder under throttle and you can hear that V8 sing and in my opinion much better than just the catback system.

I just have to sort a remap now to make use of the full Milltek system. :)

If you really want to make the exhaust note more pronounced then the non-resonated is definately the way to go. The downpipes are there as a performance increase, but they will also have an affect on the sound as they are larger and more free flowing.

I'm also looking into which system (res or non-res) to go for, this video might help...
