Thanks for the suggestion Dippy. I haven't used that method in years when choosing a car - I tend to go with my heart rather than my head.

However, facing the dilemma of what car I really want, I think it may give me a good start on whittling down the selection list - if I can keep the emotion out of it

After seeing Chris' S4 the other night, I'm leaning back towards that now

Trev, just get an RS4. You, and everyone else for that matter, know that that's what you want

Re the "not enough go" comment, I know AmD have already seen 400bhp from a chip and exhaust, and I'm sure the others will do / have done similar or better. Maybe worth trying a tuned car before making your mind up based on performance... of course, won't make it look any more special!

Thanks Riz, I think that might just be too "special" for me.

Actually, it wasn't particularly the looks of the S4 because I already knew it looked like yer basic A4 - just the whole package didn't do it for me.

400bhp sounds more interesting though, so I may wait and see if I can pick up a second-hand car in 6-9 months, then maybe get it tuned.

I'd ruled out the M3 because I want a comfortable M-way cruiser for a family of 4 as well as something that is happy pottering around town, and the M3 didn't strike me as fitting that bill. Having said that, I just realised that I've never actually driven one, so now might be a good time to have a test drive. Not sure about having to have "w@nker" tatooed on my forehead if I get one though? Great car the M3 but you can't get away from admitted dubious image. But do you drive a car or drive an image?

But do you drive a car or drive an image?

That's a good question!
However, I'm not put off the M3 by the image - I've owned a BMW (tractor) before and didn't mind the image then, so I doubt I'd care now.

What put me off was my perception that it had to be pushed (ie revved) to be enjoyed at its best, and wasn't a particularly comfortable family car. But as I've already indicated, since I've never actually driven one, maybe I should find out!
