sorry my first post is negative thought you guys might be able to help. but ive just bought an s4 from audi so has a warranty. the first fault is the brake master warning light coming on occasionally. took it to the dealers and they said it was a known fault to do with the wiring loom from the battery being too near the brake warning line. apparently it comes on when the car is first started and cold. they have repostioned the wiring loom but it still has the fault. they are in discussions with the factory and should have an answer in the new year. doing a bit of fault diagnosing myself and it seems to happen cornering hard to the right. the brakes themselves are fine so i am not too worried but it is annoying and shouldnt happen. has anyone on the forum had a similar problem?

the second thing is on start up there is a rattle when the engine is cold. is this common? it sounds like a car i had before that had a rattling heat shield around the cats. i have read some posts about audi service mods to the car like the throttle setup and something with the engine after start.
the gearbox is very notchy from 2nd to 3rd but having read a post on here it appears that is just how the car is!
my car is an 04 plate would this have had the mods or not?

hello to scotty as i recognise him from the tt forum. it was one of his videos that inspired me to buy an s4. apart from the niggly faults i find the car lovely to drive, i am teaching the kids to wave as we overtake things. i have had some great laughs as not many people expect a family estate car to be that quick!!

The rattle on cold - is that not the timing chain issue? Good the car is under warranty - not that that means anything in my experience, but still its better than nothing. Not a B6 S4 owner so cant help on this, but welcome to the league of S & RS ownership :)

Yes. Try topping up the brake fluid. All that waffle from Audi I think you may find is rubbish!

The rattle - do you mean only for a few seconds at start up? If so, that's been discussed on this forum at length so scroll back; I think it's been decided it's the timing chain taking a few seconds to tighten and as Zero mentioned there is a TSB to improve it, or it's just the fact the V8 takes a while to fill wih oil - it's been so long I can't remember which!
