RS4. When you start looking at b7's the choice becomes harder IMO

I may be the odd voice on this thread. I'm not saying don't go for an RS4 but do consider what you're getting into.

They've been around a while and few (if any) will have had an easy life. You need to consider the turbos and the bendy wheels and lack of warranty.

Or you get a more modern S4.

The old RS4 may be a better driver but if all we was after was a drivers car then we'd all be in Caterhams!

B5 RS4 all the way.

Doesnt cost much to fix turbos if they go. If they do go you can get tonnes more power than a n/a S4 will ever have. Even an n/s RS4 B7 wont keep up once turbos are changed.

Also, its a solid drive, and very comfortable car, expecially when bits have been uprated. Such as springs, suspensions, ride height etc.

Also they may have had a hard life, but with an RS4 most have been looked after pretty well as its an enthusiasts car. You can pick up some cool low mileage examples, just broken in and ready to go.

I have a chipped S4 stage 2+ and I drove the new RS4 and didnt think much of it. Mine had bags more torque and mines an S4 B5. So you can imagine what an it would be like if i compareed it to standard B6 S4.

Bendy wheels are a problem, but buy one with this problem rectified. Also with MRC there to help as well as a wealth of other reputable tuners, problems arent going to be much of an issue.

If I could have afforded an RS4 I would have bought one. If youre lucky enough to afford one, go for it mate and good luck.

I know they did a super charger kit for the B6 S4, which does transform the B6 into a true beast. But at £10,000 its a lot of money to spend. Id rather get a B5 RS4.

Only reason you should get a B6 S4, is if you want something more refined, comfortable, and easier to drive (as in less effort). Also the newer cars will have a slightly nicer interior in my opinion. It is a nice car, but not as fun as theB5 and no way near as powerful as the B5 RS4.

Question is are you power hungry or want something modestly quick and less troublesome. As Scorrt said, a B6 S4 wont blow any turbos. You should go and test drive a few examples of each then make up your mind. Which ever drive you prefer, is the one to go for.

My choice would be the B5 RS4. Thats just me.

By the way scotty, what is your AMD stage 3 S4 pushing out power and torque wise. I was unaware they did a stage 3 on your car as i thought you couldnt get much out of it as its n/a.

When I bought mine from Docklands Audi, they had the B5 RS4 and the B6 S4 Avant & Saloon. Took all three out for a test.

The S's are really nice, don't get my wrong, but the RS set me alight. Sadly between the test and arranging finance 4 hours later, some guy had bought it to ship to Ireland :(

I now of course have my B6 S4, which although I love to bits, wasn't my first choice.

The main factor here is what are you looking for...?

If you are looking for a monster in a straight line but don't care about anything else then I would recommend going for an RS4....after all it is a great car. if you are looking for somehting newer and easier all round then I would go for the B6.

As for costs I would be willing to bet £100 than maintenance costs in order to keep the car in peak condition on the B5 will be significatnly higher over a fixed period when compared to the B6....

If you are doing 10miles a day blasting country roads/around town then probably the RS4, if you are doing any more than that and need something more sedate then go for the B6. One thing for sure the B6 is much harder to get into three figures......that is a good thing isn't it....at least if you want to keep your licence?

just my 2p worth....
