I think it depends on what database he's got the information from. I think an insurance database might have that sort of info.

If you have the reg number and make of car, then the DVLA website will tell you the model and date of reg.
Maserati GranTurismo GTS Auto, S3 Sportback, TT2 3.2 Roadster, Disco3 for the heavy stuff.

Any dealer, or indeed pretty much anyone who works at a dealership, can get access to databases that pull up model, reg, year, colour changes, finance details, accident history etc etc. So I wouldn't be surprised if anyone with a bit of motor trade savvy could access those databases too. They're run by companies such as Experian.
