Poor consumption

Post by jammyhl » Sun May 07, 2006 10:04 pm

I've only done a couple hundred miles in my girlfriends 04 S4 Avant (picked it up for her on Saturday) but it is a real struggle to get it to return anything over 20mpg.

Between Wood Green and the southern edges of London the car could only manage 18mpg. When I got on to more open roads in Kent/Sussex it was returning around 20.5mpg with more spirited driving, but even when I idled around in 6th it only improve to 21.5mpg

Is this normal? I had expected at least mid 20's from this car.

Anyone else getting similarly poor consumption?

Since we've been doing less town work the average on the car has climbed from 18mpg to 19.9mpg.

If I really try then I can get 25mpg from a trip (not stop/start).

I drove up to Blackpool at the weekend and manage to average 25.8mpg (all Motorway).

Drove into the office this morning in very heavy traffic and averaged 8mpg.

Its about right. Remember the S4 has performance that a supercar had 15-20 years ago and those cars did 10-12mpg. Its okay really! Enjoy...

S4 about the juice....

Post by quattrosteph » Sun May 14, 2006 2:08 pm

When i had mine i did get at the best....20mpg mixt, motorway at 75 85 mph 24.5 mpg!! To get that i had to concentrate to drive "eco" and to be honest after a while it did my head!! :x And with that engine if you change gear too early (bellow 2000rpm) it is more juicy in fuel + oil, that is a V8 thing... After the test period i gave up and did drive the car normaly without taking care of the consomption, At the end of the day it is a v8 4.2 and you can't expect the car to be good on juice, i knew it before i bought the car...
But if you compare with some other cars now or even quite few years ago let say 19mpg it is not bad at all.
Remember some subaru (only 2 litres) do 19 mpg on average!!!

Just enjoy the car and get a Nectar card!!
