Over the past weekend, I entered in a semi-local ice race. I’ve been looking to do an ice race/snowcross event for the past few years, but the timing and weather has never worked out. This time it did. Simply put, this may have been the most fun I’ve ever had in my S4. Considering I’ve been lucky enough to do the Nürburgring, Autobahn, drag racing, and multipletrack dayswith this car, that’s quite a statement.
It’s the first time I’ve ever done an event like this so I went in with an open mind and low expectations of myself. I’ve done plenty of deep snow drivingand grew up in the Midwest so I’m comfortable with driving winter conditions. Being realistic, I knew my car’s wide 3 year old relatively wide 225/40/18 Dunlop Wintersport 3D’s were far from the tire of choice for such an event and my car’s heavy curb weight would put it at a disadvantage. On the flip side, I also knew Stage III horsepower would make things entertaining. What the heck, let’s try it.
It wasn’t easy getting everything ready on race day considering my wife and daughter would be coming too. As a result, I showed up on site with only 10 minutes left of pre-race practice sessions. I was able to get two practice runs in to get a feel of how the car would respond on the ice surface. As the course was fairly fresh, there was about 1-2â€
