How many were made?

Ive always had a thing about picking rare cars for some reason, im still looking for an S4 Avant.
I was wondering how many S4s were produced... I figured it was in the thousands but according to the MOT data published thats way way way off.

Only 10 1999 plate S4 avants passed their MOTs in 2007?! and 12 2000 plates.
even for the straight S4 only 372 1999 plates?
Is it just a case of mot testers listing it as an A4 Avant and not S4 or are they really that rare!!? If its correct they are more exclusive than a Bentley
My current car a honda prelude 1041 passed in 1998. Common as muck eh
