hi everyone,

I'm a new S4 owner... I've just bought a 98 Nargo blue with 130000, very pleased.

I'm sure that all my questions have been asked before but could someone please point me to the right threads please.

first, whats the deal with changing xenon bulbs?

Second, the drivers information display is 'fading' around the edges. there are no Pixels/lines dropped out.

third, i believe that the rocker cover gasket is licking a bit of oil as there is a slight burnt oil smell and a wisp if smock from that area (driver side). is this an easy DIY fix?

also, i live in guildford and wonder if there other members close and where do people have the cars serviced?

Not sure about the 1st one. The 2nd one has been talked about alot, so if you do a search for "fading DIS" or similar then you will find the answers, but yes it can be fixed/replaced. The 3rd one, well if you are competent then you should be able to change the gasket yourself, there's a write up somewhere on how to do it...Failing that take it to a specialist, and have them check everything else over while it's in. There are a few places you could take it to, they know these cars inside out....

Has it had anything done to it - remap etc...? Nice motors and milage aint a problem as long as it's been well looked after. I'm on 114k and she's still running sweet

thanks for the heads up. the car has a full service and is totally sweet. and not mapped - would you say it's worth it? my only concern would be messing up the MPG

the only other thing is a small rattle that developed the weekend i bought it. i don't believe it's the manifold rattle that i hear so much about as it's only audible on the drivers side on a bumpyish road, at tick over and on smooth roads its silent. i can also feel it a bit through the steering wheel. any ideas on where it might be coming from?

on the other points, do you know the threads, as the search facility does not seem to bring any relevant post...

No probs m8.... I'm not sure about the rattle/noise your on about could be nay number of things if you can feel it through the steering wheel. Might be worth getting it checked to prevent anything further happening....

If you do a search regarding the DIS it will definately bring something up....You have to look through the threads though as it might not be in the subject bar....

Yes it is definately worth getting it mapped, you will get better MPG and it will transform the car when you use lead foot. MRC seems favourite but there are others out there too. You definately wouldn't regret it

What was you driving before the S4?

Dave, have you checked if the cambelt has been renewed? At 130K it should have been done once and will soon be time for the second.

Whilst I agree with the comment about mapping in general, I suggest that caution may be deserved. If your car is on the original turbos then at 130K a boost increase could bring them rapidly to the end of their life. Until you are sure that your oil leak is just a gasket failure, you need to treat that engine with respect.

If you didn't know, the turbos need to be replaced in pairs and 99% of people will remove the engine to replace them. This is a big ticket item.

Of course if you have £5K to spare then by all means go for K04 turbos and remap etc.

I've just found out that 1 Xeon has just died - i don't think its the bulb as it's come on once - i believe the igniters fail? where is this and how can i test for it? the car is 98.

hi m8 the igniter is built in under the headlight its a valeo one and costs about £120 for a new one. mine went 2 weeks ago but i just bought one from ebay and wired that in instead hth

The igniter on the pre-facelift lights are on the back of the unit, not the underside.
