Faulty Instrument Panel...

I have a 1999, pre-face lift s4...
My problem is that in the middle of the dash the digital display isnt showing the radio/cd details... I think there should be 3 levels for the display... The sat nav doesnt work correctly either... I can hear the directions but nothing comes up in the display to show me visible where to go... Could these be linked to the same fault
The display is nice and bright and when testing all of the check list everything works as it should...
Any suggestions as to why i cant see what radio station i am on would be appreciated...
Andy

Do you have an aftermarket radio? These don't bring up the radio details on DIS. If not I dunno, loose connection somewhere?

Its the original stereo... I have disconnected the battery tonight and i will connect it up in the morning. I read on a previously asked question on here that this might reset the equipment. We shall soon see...
Fingers crossed...
If that doesnt work then i will look for loose connections somewhere in behind the dash...
Thanks
Andy

I assume you've scanned with VAG.COM ?
It sounds as if your CAN is not connected properly, what Sat Nav is it, the RNS-D ?

Yeah... Scanned with Vagcom... no faults found...
Where abouts can i find this CAN... Is it down the left hand side of the steering colum... Under the dash cover plate.. What does it look like... I might have a look at it tomorrow if i know what am looking at...
Thanks
Andy

Are you sure the Sat Nav you have was fitted from the factory?
My only knowledge of this comes from retro-fitting the later RNS-E sat nav, for this I had to take the CAN signals from behind the cluster, however yours should already be connected. I also had to recode the unit to tell it to display on the DIS.
Like I say though, if you had it from factory then this info may not be of use.

Pre-facelift cars don't have CAN and I assume ogg14 has the vintage Satnav without a screen (ie: pre RND-S).
Does sound like something isn't wired in correctly. The only time the top third of my DIS is not illuminated whilst the rest is, is when the stereo is off. Pull the stereo out and have a look to see if there are any obvious loose/missing wires.
A previous owner may have fitted an aftermarket unit at one time and not replaced the wiring correctly.

Didn't spot the pre-facelift bit.
Listen to Blue Thunder instead!

I connected up the battery this morning... and still the same... No display...
Yes... Its the very old sat nav... Control unit down beside the handbrake... Its the original unit from Blaupunk... Maybe BNS???
I should be getting the radio info on this display... Shouldnt i???
I will remove the stereo and check the wiring in behind it and if nothing is found there i will remove the instrument panel and check there...
Thanks for all of your suggestions... They are appreciated

After connecting the battery this morning... Still no sat nav and radio display...
I decided to go onto the Ross-tech site and see what i could find... I am well chuffed... I have managed to re-code the satnav and the radio display to work perfectly on the dash...
Everything is now working as it should...
Thanks to all of the above...

IIRC, there is a button on the bottom of the computer stalk that if you press and hold, it turns the top 1/3 of the the DIS display off (it also serves to reset the trip mileage / mpg etc..)

The button Nige is talking about switches the whole DIS off, not just the top portion.
Anyhoo, well done ogg14, and thanks for posting your findings. Could help a fellow member out in the future.

Could you post a link to the right page on the ross-tech site - I find it almost impossible to navigate through that site!
