custom exhaust.

Post by rocketmq1 » Mon Oct 20, 2008 9:17 am

Going to take a trip to my local powerflow dealer this week to see about having some new pipes made up.

Going to have a go at gutting the pre cats myself.
Then thinking about having the cats removed and flanged so i can replace for mot day.
Then a single 3" pipe into a back box, doing away with the middle box.

Not sure if doing away with the cats and middle box will make it to loud?

Does any one have any pics of a system like this or anything else i should be considering?

Cheers.

Go for a twin 2.5 , They flow much better than a single 3in.

I've got the miltek 3" single. I've got no pre-cats. I went ot my local power flow dealer a while ago and had done what you want done.

Here's a couple pics taken off my mobile.

It's not as loud as you think it will be. IMO it sounds good, and not over the top.....

Have you gutted both precats aswell as both cats removed? Was it halfway through the job?

are you doing it for performance or noise, and do you want it future proof for big power?

s4-99 thanks, that looks good thats the sort of thing i an looking at. cool.

you say you have the miltek backbox, do you have a middle box too?

I am looking at using a powerflow back box just to get it all done in one hit, not sure if this is the best route.
I havent seen a powerflow back box on an s4, i mainly see them on one litre saxos, this puts me off a little.

doug, just going for the performance really. i want to get rid of the dip in power at about 5000rpm the car feels restricted/strangled. i have read on here sorting the exhaust out will help this.

would like to have a better exhaust tone than the standard set up but need to take the misses and kids shopping at weekends so can't have it too loud. more tone than volume if possible.

not thought about big power in the future, i would probably go k04 if/when my turbos go so 400-450ish bhp would be max if i am forced too :( ......

Get the dual if you want 400+ down the line. If you want custom find an exhaust place that does exhausts using a mandrel bender, then you don't get a restictive bend.

My experience of powerflow is very varied - they are a franchise so it depends on who you get to do it.

I had a Powerflow on my G60 Corrado (catback) sounded and performed well too. But as Doug said depends on the welding competence.

The problem with power flow ect is they will make the system with what they've got and is easiest to make , They tend to use pipe that's too small with compression bends not mandrel. The biggest problem is the boxes , most don't have large bore boxes and will use anything they have .
If you want a 2.5in pipe the box should be large enough for the pipe to slide in.
I've spent the last 4 years making custom systems and have done a lot of work with some major manufacturers and seen so many bad systems ..
