Is it normaly to run the car in 6. gear on a rollingroad?

I thought it was generally done in the ratio that is the direct one. i.e. 1:1 so thats quite often 5th gear in a 6 speed car as the 6th is an overdrive gear for crusing. In my BMW it was done in 5th and it is a 5 speed box.

An S4 would be doing 140+ at the redline in 5th!

Yes thats true, but my BMW is doing 170 mph at the red line and it was done in 5th gear.

Also remember that the power quoted will change depending on what gear you use as the transmission loss and general heat loss and friction is higher in higher gears. The coast down doesn't always compensate for this properly. You should always use the same gear for direct comparisons.

If your car jumps off the rollers even in 2nd gear then its going to be a write off no matter what.

Last RR i went too the runs were done in 3rd, still gets up to circa 100 mph :wink:

Oh dear - I suppose that comment was meant if it was properly strapped down so it can't move, and so the only way it is coming off is if the rollers jam.

i have heard a rumour that a car that does jump will stall instantly. not sure if thats truth or not.
