cam timing

Can anyone clarify the cam chain setting process on a B5 S4? I have recently refitted my cams after changing the VVT gaskets & cam seals but have just read an article that says both banks are set up differently, not set up the same (16 links) as seen in ELSA.

I haven't started the car yet so it would be good to find this info sooner rather than later.

Cheers,

Mike

Have just had the problem... The left head has 16 links, and the right has 15 links.. No matter what, the marks on the cams must fit..

If you have 16 link on both side, the one will looks like the picture..

Thanks for that. I do have all the marks lining up correctly when brought up to TDC so maybe I counted the 16 rollers wrong.

The heads are basically identical, and so are the cams and stuff. There are 16 links on both of the heads. At least is has been like that when I have done some camshaft work...

Just see that the marks are on correct place. And turn the engine enough that the tensioner gets in place.

I DID turn the engine, but it was always the same.. 16 links on both heads.. At the beginning I had 16 links on both heads and the car was driving like S...
Then I put 15 links on the head where the cams marks didnt fit, and after that it was running like a dream... I know that ELSA said 16 links. Yesterday I had som RS4 heads, and there was also 16 and 15 links on the heads.. SO NO MATTER WHAT, THE CAM MARKS MUST FIT

the heads are the same they just face opposite directions, there should be 16 rollers between the marks on each cam,the mark on the exhaust cam(i think recalling from memory not elsa) is offset to the roller on the chain and is therfore difficult to read, hope this helps

the markings on the left hand bank are offset. the manuals do not show you how to time that bank properly. 16 rollers(mark to mark) but offsetted to the outside of hte heads.

So if when brought up to TDC all the cutouts on the sprockets line up with the pointers on the cam caps then it should be ok?

as long as you have 16 rollers between the marks on the cams, the notches in the cams dont line up central with the arrows on the cam caps they line up with the edge of the notch

It must be correct then. If it was a tooth out then the notches wouldn't line up with the pointers.

Cheers.

don't trust notches to pointers as that all depends on the tensioner position (fully up, down or in the middle)

So even if the motor is turned clockwise and brought up to TDC the notches still cannot be trusted?

I thought it was normal to have on tensioner up and one tensioner down during normal operation due to the tension sides of the chain being different, ie one is tensioned on the top and one is tensioned on the bottom?

I'm away so haven't finished the car yet, so it would be good to clear this up before I get home.

Cheers!

16 rollers is the specified setting the pointers and notches should be somwhere near but you must have 16 rollers between the notches on the cams
