FMIC Fitted!

Post by loomx » Mon Aug 04, 2008 11:51 am

After a weekend of rain, swearing, pain and so on the FMIC is now fitted! Got to say these new cxracing pipes are a really tight fit. but they do fit... just, you have to cut LOADS out of the crash bar and a bit out of the bumper too. Havent fitted the side grilles yet, but I can see that being a bit tight.

Iv cut the number plate plinth out and put the no.plate on the side. I think it looks pretty neat, just need to get the mesh on the sidegrilles in.

I will try and get some photos up today/tomorrow.

Hey. I have one of those kits as well so would be interesting to see what the fit and finish of yours is like compared to mine. I've gone down the route of converting the side grilles into RS4 style ones (quite a lot of work but worthwhile). Will post some picks up if you want to see what it looks like?

Ross.

I have had the centre bars cut out and smoothed, but Im not sure if the grille with mesh is going to fit with out hitting the pipes.

just, you have to cut LOADS out of the crash bar and a bit out of the bumper too.
Is that going to be safe in an accident?
Just wondering on how much potential gains you have made over the added risk imposed over compromising safety...

Well anyone who has a FMIC will have to remove part of the crash bar, its basically the bit behind where the number plate goes that needs cutting out. A few bits hear and there to miss the pipes too.

Point was, is it massive gains over RS4 SMIC's. Probably only a few horse
I would have gone RS4 side mounts and retain front crashbar integrity and airflow to the aircon/water rads.

Well there is that. Pedestrians are probably going to get their legs cut off the way we cut it. lol

It was smacks of effort though (I'm defo not doing it to my s4, i'm sticking to rs4 coolers). It just better be worth it. i.e. get the 500bhp you were looking to get.

We tried to keep as much of the crashbar as possible. But most of it has to go. It just won't fit otherwise.

I'll post some pics loomx.
Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves!?!

Without the FMIC, minus the front mounted fan as well.

Pic of car with FMIC on floor to compare for size. It's a big momma. ;-)

Plenty needs cutting off, including the plastics just underneath the headlight.
Image

The plumbing roughly in place and held using steel wire. It does help to hold it in place while you wrestle with pipes.

Looks so cool. Tempting to leave bumper off eh?
Image

Making some support brackets for the IC. The old front mounted fan bracket will be a donor to make bracket.

We'll have to post some other pics now we are less agigated and the weather isn't pissing it down. ;-)

Yeh, i just need to mesh and put in the side grilles and get them fitted, i think the pipes will look quite nice behind the mesh unpainted... the only problem is the grille will not fit on the right hand side with out cuting part of it out because of one of the pipes...

I was thinking i might put the grilles in and cut out part of the grill and mesh that needs cutting out to allow fitment around the pipe. and just paint the part of the pipe that sticks out black so that is doesnt stand out?

The bumper was childs play compared to getting everything else to fit.

Even the intercooler itself is straight behind the bumper. :-)
