Can anyone tell me the impact of disconnecting the gearbox oilcooler pipes and putting blanking plugs in place short term? Obviously the gearbox oil won't get cooled, but that is better than it leaking all over the place
Will anything happen to the oil pump inside the gearbox? Is there another route inside the box for the oil to flow around?

To prevent any possible damage, just go to any hydraulic hose place and get a link pipe to join the 2 together.
Cost..........£10?

Anyone know, or can measure, the diameter of the banjo unions so I can order a link pipe?

You just need to know the thread size in the box, get some adaptors from gearbox thread to BSP, have a pipe made with BSP Swivel Females on the end and hey presto, JD!

So why have them if there not needed?

I'm not saying they're not needed. I suspect it's to warm the oil up to reduce drag in the gearbox as well as cool it down should it get hotter than the water.
For my requirements, today, which involves a leaking pipe, blanking the feeds is the best option.
However, the stealer was singularly unhelpful this morning. I don't own a b7 S4 so he can't find the plugs for me cos the computer won't tell him.

WOW. Camberley Audi called me back! The thread on the banjo bolts is M16x1.5.
VAG blanking plugs are £4.62.
Speedflow M16x1.5 blanking plugs are a bit cheaper -

but musty A6 is running rs4 box.
in my car all i have done is cut the pipes and looped them back connect them together with some high pressure rubber hose you can see it coming in under the gearbox mount

Right I now have blanking plugs. I can take the leaking pipe off and quickly bung the gearbox. Then I can either loop the pipes together with a bit of hose as suggested, or I can leave the blankinig plugs in and see what happens. I think it'll be fine. No one in their right mind would design a 'box which used a pump with an external pipe as the only vent for the pressure. I hope....
what I really want to know is how Alex got my engine crane out of my garage without me knowing....
