I was doing some reading about kit cars & it seems that its quite popular to 'heat wrap' the exhaust and manifold to reduce under bonnet temperatures, and to stop the gasses cooling as they go down the exhaust which means they can get out faster. Faster exit of exhaust gasses helps keep power up as would reducing intake temps (under bonnet temps).

but the reason I need it is to stop the floor pan in the passengers footwell melting peoples shoes as the exhaust runs so close!

I was wondering if anyone has tried this on the S4? or would it be a waste of time and money? 50ft of heat wrap is about £60 so it wouldnt be that costly to do the job. Perhaps it would also help with sound deadening if anyones exhaust is a little too loud?

Just some ideas! Would be good to hear some opinions!

I have done mine at the top, after the turbos, I am very pleased with the results, it is cooler under there and quieter on spool up and wot.
It meant I could shorten the heat shields to give better access to the o2 sesors, sides of the engine and more space for the air around the exhaust.



I think it is a good mod if you can do it when the engine is out.

I did this too. I also wrapped the manifolds where the oil feed crosses under. Inexpensive mod.

do you think it would it be as effective as ceramic coating for manifolds? I think you can use the tape along with some special heat insulating spray paint stuff you can get too?

Does anyone know if it does make the car/exhaust quieter, or if it does help with power? It would be interesting to know as its such a cheap thing to do.

Can it be done on the car or do u need to do it when the engine is out or the exhaust is removed?

You can wrap the downpipes in situ I would imagine. Forget the manifolds! Engine out time.

People say about the power / exhaust gas energy. Seems far fetched to me. It definitely stops things nearby melting though!

it also holds the heat in the metal of the exhaust and changes the composition of the exhaust metal. ive read its not to be done on a stainless exhaust due to it hardening the metal over time, but only heard that on the net so take it with the usual pinch of salt.

definitely only worth doing on a heavily tuned car.

To do a nice job it takes two sets of hands even on the bench !! Doubt it could be done on the car .

I agree with Grizz, to do it properly you need to get it tight and it will not be possible on the car, I am not sure about removing the heat shields completely, the turbos are then exposed, especially on the passenger side.

Shortening them and wrapping the rest is a perfect solution, means the EGTs , bolts and 02 sensors are easy to get to but the temps are kept down at the bulkhead.

The V-bands are great, the engine can be removed much quicker, O2 sensors stay on etc.

pretty much right enough, although not all alloy variations of stainless are the same.
the majority of stainless steels though should not be coated in any way.
