Turbo Dynamics K04 Hybrids

Post by h8cak » Fri Jul 04, 2008 7:55 pm

Just purchased a K04 for the Mrs S3. Got it from Turbo Dynamics in Dorset. It Was custom built for the cupra cup compition cars. It has blue print everything and is very non standard. Cant wait to get it on there. Any way as the title says, I asked what they could do for our S4's. He said he could do the standard K04's , K04's with RS6 internals or......... a custom made hybrid with larger internals than the RS6 hybrid. It would be a 1 pice internal bade from bilit aluminium. He said it had been tested on an s4 up to 650Bhp. Off the top of his head he reconed it would be £500 - £600 per turbo on top of the K04 price. Hes sending me details of all this text week. what do we think?

Mrc map by any chance? The guy did say that they did have a problem with 1 set that mrc fitted. He is sure it was not the turbos? He did say that Doug was not a fan?

I expect they would be quite lag free but not as able, ultimately, as able as a straight RS6 or RS6 based hybrid.

IMHO:

The K04-25 from the RS4 has a small exhaust housing and every bit of exhaust gas has to go through just two of them. You could shove a massive impeller in but all that gas has to get out again - through the exhaust housings. No problem it'll get shoved through by the exhaust strokes you may say, but there is a price - high exhaust gas back pressure and a tiny amount of exhaust gas will remain in the combustion chamber as it cannot escape. This will ruin your ability to push the timing out, which will limit the power. And low timing advance leads to high EGTs!

Still for those of us with K04-25s it's a good 50 or so bhp more for not much cash.

Do you know if they cut the turbine wheel back? This can sometimes allow a smaller housing to flow a little more as there is less wheel in the way.

A better turbo would be based on the RS6 housings, with an even larger impeller. I wonder if they can do that for the same price?
S4 - no longer missing 1 engine. Last seen leaving trailing black lines of gearbox oil.

I had a customer supply some turbos of theirs and we fitted them. Pressure test them and the compressor housings are leaking, so they had to come out again. Turbo Dynamics did not bother to speak to us about what we thought of their turbos, or what was wrong. I understand that you can always have a failure in turbos - we have had new turbos built wrong before - so would not hold that against them. I did see an email he sent to my customer and they do not seem to understand how these cars work or what the limits are or even what we do.

spen its more that it is physically impossible to flow beyond a certain point, at that point there is a cut off , the compressor will not be driven to flow more once this point has been reached, back pressure is relatively small at these speeds and not the issue. exhaust gas is actually quite resistant to knock, but for high power of course you want mostly inlet gas in the chamber

Yes a MRC, there was no problems with my turbos matt at TD did say at 24-26 psi should see over 500bhp at 28psi I get 522 going too do a couple of dynos and see what difference I get.

When they say they get 600 there thinking on the lines of 1.8T with this turbo gets about 340bhp so by thinking x2 it seems 600+ but are engines are 1.3 either side thats where the difference is. my 2p
