RE: how do you remove fuel pump?
Remove boot carpet.
Lift open the round inspection panel behind the rear drivers side seat.
Remove the slip ring that secures the pump in place. Carefully remove the pump and cradle
Carefully remove wiring and plumbing
Voila.
Removal is opposite but be careful not to restrict the fuel gauge sender travel.

Before you start drive your car until you have zero miles remaining.
The cradle houses the pump and needs a right old twist through 90 degrees then it comes out. It's a nightmare without the audi tool or at least a home made one - like a big "crows foot" spanner.

S4 - no longer missing 1 engine. Last seen leaving trailing black lines of gearbox oil.

Ill second that, its even more difficult without the tool to get it back in.
Buy the tool. If not, file a little of the plastic off, where it locates,(just to make the twist easier) when you get the full assembly out.
