Air Filters

Post by Turbo Joe » Tue Jun 24, 2008 5:38 pm

Are these performance air filters all what they are boasting themselves to be or is it just better to stick to the standard air filter? Cheers Guys

Having wasted money on these before without noticeing any difference in performance I would say stick with the std ones.

Although the performance ones are supposed to last longer I have never been convinced that after 50,000 miles they flow any better than a std one would as they still fill up with the same crap.

Even if you changed the std one every 12000 miles you would still pay less over 5 years than for a performance one.

Just my six pence worth

I would NEVER fit any of the 'cone filters' to any car. I used to do a lot of the before and after rolling road runs for one of the largest filter companies and only ONCE did I see any gain with one of these fitted, most of them actually lost a few BHP.
They did sound better though, if you like that sort of thing.

standard filter and modify your airbox with a few holes to allow cooler air from the wheel arch area to get in. Best of both worlds - cooler air and a bit of induction noise.

Strong opinions out there. I can only say 500 bhp @6000 rpm and 520 ftlbs @ 3200 rpm using a K&N cone, so they can't all that bad. Had it for two years, no dead MAF so far. Maybe I'd get a few more bhp if I went RS4 airbox? Maybe not.
S4 - no longer missing 1 engine. Last seen leaving trailing black lines of gearbox oil.

Chubby also has a cone on his 550bhp RS4. And he has a carbon divider to stop the warm air from the engine.

I wonder what Doug has in his S4?

Seems expensive. I made a heat shield from wire gauze and flexible self adhesive aluminised sheet.

yes it uses the AEM dryflow, http://search.ebay.com/Audi-S4-A6-Cold- ... wQ20Filter

I have also seen some S4's with a hole in the headlamp! going to the filter.
