more EGT Sensor problems..

Post by Mikey-S » Sun Jun 15, 2008 5:56 pm

I've recently fitted a bank 1 EGT sensor due to a permanent short to ground fault code. After that the car was fine to drive with no flat spots etc.

I've been out for a blast today and it seemed to have flat spots again, so I've done a fault code check and found 2 faults:

EGT sensor 1 implausable signal: intermittent.
EGT sensor 2 short to ground: intermittent.

I guess the bank 2 sensor may have now failed, but can anyone help with a reason for the new bank 1 sensor giving out an implausable signal??

Help much appreciated!

Mike

if you log it it might read under 945 and that is the implausable signal. If you have replaced a sensor and you are getting the codes again you have something else wrong.

Thanks Doug, but you lost me!! Can you explain the 945 bit? I have replaced sensor 1 and after a week I'm now getting an implausible signal fault on it. Do you think I could have a dodgy sensor?

i think you have another problem with the car that is causing the car to run too hot (like maf) or you have an earth problem to the manfiold (hte brown wires on the same bolt to the egt electronics - are they connected?)

Funny enough I did find those earth wires loose when I fitted the EGT sensor, so I know they're tight. Silly question, but are high temps anything to do with having straight through downpipes?

is the car chipped? some chips do not like low backpressure in the exhaust - as they run far too high egts.

log the maf and egt on a 3rd to 4th wot run and post it up.

It isn't chipped. I'll try to post a log tonight, cheers.

you won't know what egts are doing because you have a c box ecu - we need tpo put a c box ecu in with egts switched on.

log block 003 and 020
then 003 and 115

I have a similar problem, repaced bank 1 egt about a year ago, get "short to ground intermittent" every so often.

Clear the code and sometimes it will go a month without coming back but sometimes will also come back within a day.

I had replaced the maf at the same time as Doug warned me a failing maf could kill the egt's.

Checked/cleaned earth to manifold connection at the same time and was ok.

Ran some logs today and had peak boost of 1820 and maf of 224 so I don't think I have any leaks.

Now thinking I should check the connection to the egt.

Doug, here's the log you suggested I do. Have you any ideas?

I ran it today with the MAF disconnected after advice from Grizz (thanks Grizz) and it still held back slightly. I also checked the fault codes and now both EGT sensors are showing an implausible signal fault code.

Mike I am no expert on the logs, but you need to rev it a bit more than that.... if you look at a lot of the old logs they are well into the 6k rmp.

The first run goes over 6k and the second tops at 5880... I thought that would be plenty?

MAF readings look low to me but Doug will soon tell you.

If they are you could have cooked your egts.

Wish I could sort mine out, may resort to buying another egt although I'm not convinced this one is faulty.

If you have egt codes and other issues you should not run the car with the maf disconnected - it can run lean - and it looks like you could have damaged the other EGT.

it is hard to say from the logs what is up. We would use one of our ecus to see egts.

tell me what block 032 is saying. Are there any leaks?

I see that yours are starting to drop before that.. I that is around 250bhp so that is a low reading.... I am not really up on this but I was thinking near 220 is a good reading. yours is not massively low, i have seen 170.... did you clear all the codes then blast it? mine has go into crap mode before, around 7 psi!!
