I've read as much information as I can on the site, all very useful.

Thinking of buying a S4 Avant and have seen one for less than £6K, T reg looks like it's got the face-lift body, 123K, full Audi service history, with cloth (is this alacantra?).

I realise economy isn't going to be brilliant, understatement, but I only have a 6 mile commute. Car will be used for longer distance business trips, petrol reimbursed, apart from that most journeys will be short or for fun! Plan would be to run it for another 20K or so then either replace it or keep it as a weekend toy. No real plans to modify it but would want to do some track days. There is a local Audi specialist and I'm not that far from Banbury.

Am I being stupid, and what should I be looking for? Any recommendations for insurance, 49 with 5 years+ no claims and no points?

Definately not being stupid buying an S4.....Alacantra is suede/leather seats......

Insurance for a standard car with your details will not be mega expensive....

If you live not too far from Banbury and you do decide to buy an S4 then your new friends will/could be MRC

I don't know about the S4 but the A6 2.7T used to take about 6 miles for the oil to reach normal temp and I was getting less than 20mpg on an 7 mile commute. Obviously the A6 is a heavier car but the engine is pretty much the same.

Take a stock S4 onto a track and you WILL want to mod it:

Chip, suspension, brakes, short-shifter are pretty much the mimimum you need to remove the basic shortcomings...

My commute is 3.5 miles (75% of it at 60 mph and 25% of it at 30 mph*) with the occasional motorway run once or twice a week. I average about 21 mpg.

*Coincidentally these match the speed limits on those roads. Unfortunately I find that other drivers seem to do 75% of the journey at 30 mph (after all there are bends in the road so they couldn't possibly go any faster could they?), and then the other 25% of it at at least 40 mph (after all it is a nice straight road, and even if there are 100s of pedestrians walking to their offices along the pavement why should you they obey the 30 mph limit?)
