Morning all,

This topic seems to have been done over a few times but is very scattered over various topics. I hope to start a thread that is condensed and focused on what our options are to help me and others in the future.

My rear brakes need replacing as I need new pads and disks. Fortunately I own a facelift S4 with vented disks. This of course is the first upgrade option for those with pre-facelift cars.

Pre-facelift std = 245 x 12mm solid discs
Facelift std = 255 x 22mm vented discs

Options found so far as follows:

UPGRADE OPTIONS:

Option 1 - Thanks to UKS4APR1. MarkB will be fitting these soon to his car
http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... ic&t=67872

For NON-FACELIFT CARS <1999.5

034 Motorsport B6/7 Rear disks w/ Spacers & refurb facelift callipers

http://www.034motorsport.com/product_in ... ts_id=1170

300x22mm Discs
OEM B5 S4 Facelift Callipers
Spacer to move Calliper out
Longer Brake Lines

FULL KIT for pre-facelift cars - £??? (US$800ish?) + pads + brake lines

FOR FACELIFT CARS >1999

034 Motorport B7 S4 upgrade Brackets alone - US$75.00
http://www.034motorsport.com/product_in ... ts_id=1146
B7 S4 300x22mm Discs - £90.00 (45x2) - Price by Alan@VAG-Parts
Brake lines - £50ish???

FULL KIT for facelift cars - £180ish + new pads if needed

Option 2:

FOR BOTH PRE & POST FACELIFT CARS

RS4 B7 Rear Brake Upgrade Kit - £750+VAT (Quoted by MRC)

324 x 22mm discs cross drilled & vented discs (£200.41+VAT each!!)
Larger callipers etc etc

Option 3:

FOR BOTH PRE & POST FACELIFT CARS

This gets to silly money. I will just refer to one option I have priced by MRC. This is for an equivalent setup to the R8

Brembo 4-pot rear callipers equivalent to R8
I am not sure on the disc information

£2500+VAT

****************************************************

A lot of the information on this post has come through MRC or Alan at Vag parts. Alan is very knowledgeable & has been a great help.

According to Alan the B5 and most modern Audi's - the rear brakes only contribute 20% of the braking force to the car.

Based on all of this I think I am going to go with the B7 rear disc upgrade with the spacers from 034 motorsport. Seems best value for money. Going to try and get some cross drilled after market discs for cosmetic appeal.

Hope this helps anyone looking to do upgrades in the future.

Cheers ZeroK for taking the time to put this together. Just starting to look at rear upgrades now that my fronts are done as it feels as though there is nothing back there at the moment in comparison to the up front stoppers.

Isn't the RS6 setup hard to get to fit the rear of the B5's?

Woody, calm down. MarkB was just commenting.

We're all sharing ideas here, loosen up.

The S8 option (280x22mm) is still there and just about manages with existing brake lines etc, so no removing the lines or bleeding the brakes.

The disks are cheaper as well for replacements and there are more options for the disks as they are VAG fronts used on other cars so there are plenty of non OEM aftermarket ones out there, slotted, drilled etc.
The caliper carriers are more expensive than the 034 adapters, but the result is stock audi with no adapters etc.

so there are pros and cons.

Having looked into this last year I thought the S8 rear setup was the most cost effective route for my purposes.
A year on I have no regrets and the pad wear appears to be normal.
