Wiper Failure 98 Plate S4 B5

Post by nickyrs4 » Tue Apr 08, 2008 9:03 pm

Hi guys, im new to this forum, so a big Hello to you all.

I have a problem with my S plate Audi S4.

After the weekends snow ,came to start it this morning, was all fine, tried window wipers not realising that under all the weekends snow it was a bit frozen, and Yes you guessed it,they didn't want to work. My other half has looked at the fuse but says it's not that as the jet washers work fine and run off the same fuse. Also i'm reading a lot about the wipers becoming slow, which mine have never been and have always worked fine.

When ignition is on and you press stalk down (as if you wanted the wipers to move ) there is a clicking noise as if it should be making the connection, but nothing is happening.

Any ideas guys what it could be as i need the car to get to and from work, but cannot really use it if window wipers don't work. All other electrics are also working fine.

Thanks :(

the wiper motor could have burnt out on one spot on its commutator if the blades were frozen to the screen, its quite common for the spindles in the wiper linkage to sieze, take off the phelnum chamber cover and check the linkage if its free and you have power at the motor the wiper motors burnt out.hope that makes sense,if your near manchester and you cant make any sense of that i can help.

You need to strip out the motor and the wiper assembly and lubricate the wiper arm spindles. The spindles have seized in the assembly.

To get the unit out to strip down you will need you to remove both wiper arms and the ecu housing.

To replace the whole item is £91.66 from you dealer, if you need a new motor that is £130. About 1 hour to replace 2 hours to strip and lub the old one.

This happened to my 2000 S4. I didn't bother stripping and lubricating as I just assumed the motor had gone. I bought one from VagParts and replaced it and all was well. Getting the old motor out and the new one in is a bit of a trial - not difficult as such, just fiddly - guess the whole thing took me maybe an hour and a half or so...? Think I unbolted the ECU box to get access maybe? My other tip is to make a note of how the linkage assembly goes together (the metal arms that take drive from the motor to the wiper arms) as I didn't do that and had to ponder it all for a few minutes when putting it back together...!
