Any advice as to which is the best filter? I'm only looking at around 350bhp, but want to buy the best, and the prices of these panel filters vary so much, ie K&N £45, Pipercross £18, BMC £40.....

I run well over 400bhp with standard paper filter

But what would you run with a low restriction panel filter? I bet you would see an increase in HP, if only slight. Gotta be a good £/hp ratio.

I'm currently running a BMC panel - previous to that I ran an ITG foam ...

Did run A K & N panel without any oil before I fitted the ITG Cone

not needed with <400 double check with a tuner and save yourself some dosh. I did have a K&N fitted but went back to standard on advice. If you go for one, get the ITG or the BMC the K&N oils can confuse the MAF

Mikey, we'll meet up one night this week and i'll show you how restrictive the paper filter is on a K04'd S4

I run a K&N cone @ 500 bhp. I am a minority of one. Everyone hates it but the rolling road number was ok, and the oils haven't caused any damage after 18 months use - I still get the vagcom max of 364g/s airflow. If I was to do it again I'd get an ITG foam as they are supposed to be quieter.

To answer your Q I do not think you need to change from stock filter, IMHO the air box is a very good design and the air filter has a large surface area.
To date I have not seen undisputed dyno evidence that an aftermarket filter will provide you with power gains, although stand to be corrected.

Just out of interest for all the detractors out there ...... a little while ago Doug did some tests with various panel filters (if I remember correctly they were ITG, K&N, BMC, OEM paper). The tests were conducted on one car, back to back, and the MAF figures were measured .....
Have a guess which filter showed to flow more air than the others .... (by quite a few g/s)
(clue: it wasn't the f*cking paper one!)
