Stalling - ESP and ABS linked

Post by audiman73 » Sun Mar 30, 2008 8:10 pm

I thought I had sorted this out but it is happening again and I now don't think it is connected to the immobilizer but instead something to do with ESP or ABS. when I drive along it cuts out and the ESP and ABS light come on at the same time.

If I then turn ignition off and back on the
ESP and ABS lights go on then off and then back on. it will not start in this state, sounds like it is not firing. If I keep turning on and off the ignition eventually the ESP and ABS lights stay off and then it starts as normal. It drives fine until the two lights come on again and it all starts over.

When it is in the not starting state it wont let me connect to the engine controller through vagcom either but fine when the lights are not on.

Help this is getting embarassing and dangerous too.

Just stalled again twice. I locked it and left it a few minutes and then it started. when I went in to engine it found it fine and gave the following.

The normal cause of that code is that the battery has been disconnected ...

Sacha: is your ECU standard or modified? If modified: by who was it modified? Your problem sounds like an intermittent contact issue on the chip inside the ECU, which is more likely to occur when the chip has been physically removed for a performance upgrade for instance.

It was chipped by ABT when it was new in 2000 so yes it has been modified but it started only recently after a flat battery and some fiddling

I have seen this before on ABT S4s.... try to contact them to see if they'll fix the problem.

Hi Mihnea

I have sent a quick email to ABT and will let you know.

I was hoping that if you had time you could look at a FATS post I put up a few days ago as your knowledge would be appreciated as my car feels slow and after changing MAF it still feels a bit relaxed.

Miles away from MRC in southwest cornwall. I may just have to have a short break soon to come and see you guys.

Was it a new maf from audi ?? Try disconnecting the maf .This will bring on the abs light but you can then see if it still stalls.

Update on this. I took the car to an auto electrician today and it has been perfect all day so he just told me to bring it back if it happens again. An email to ABT is ongoing but I think that I get it now, when I disconnect the battery for the next few days it does this stalling thing and then after a short while seems to sort itself out. It is a bit of a pain though if I need to take off the battery and would like to know if this theory is even possible? Any ideas. If it behaves itself its on to dealing with it feeling too slow, so anyone who fancies helping, look at my FATS times post if you dont mind. Thanks as always
