What should we be using?

First of all, fully synthetic oil is very important.
I use 5W40 if I remember correctly, and it's excellent.

The higher rating at the far end doesn't surprise me, actually. If the engine is running harder and hotter, then you'll want an oil that maintains is correct viscosity at higher temperatures. That's what the second number guarentees, and seems to be the important change here.

Unless you're going to experience temperatures below -18 centigrade then there's not going to be a practical difference between 0w and 5w oils, and unless it's regularly below freezing where you are, then the 5w to 10w jump is not likely (according to what I read), to affect you much.

Can you get such a thing as a 0W50? If I have understood anything from all these oil threads wouldn't that be the perfect comprimise?

I remember the days of 5W50 oil. Harder to come by these days

I hate NOT taking advice from people who I am sure know more than me on a lot of engine/mechanical aspects, but it does appear to me that unless high oil temperatures are being experienced in summer (not particularly - nothing well in excess of 120 that I recall) then the 0W40 is still the best all round oil and also one of the cheapest available.

I may well follow my hunch and stay with 0W40. Talk me out of it guys

I take it 8 litres is plenty for an oil change on the S4, if so I can source that for £46 inc vat, not that I would scrimp if this really isn't the best choice.

I've used Total Quartz 9000 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil
5 Litres 5W40 long life oil for £15 + VAT from GSF then less RS246 discount

From a Total garage this is about 3 times the price...

thats nothing..dealer price for my car is 55+vat for 4 litres...i love my local halfrauds..42 all in...

Even with an oil cooler I have seen my car get slightly over 120 when having fun. I am glad I have the 10w60 as recommended by MRC. That said though it does concern me for my brief journeys to and from work where the engine does not even get warm enough to move the oil temp needle.

Good excuse for me to cycle into work more often... and I have been. Not helping my weight (see off topic post lol).

I've got 5w40 in mine and I'm due another 5k change as we speak and will probably stick with 5w40 and take a trip to halfrauds to check out their prices

What oil do RS4 owners use? Wyy are we different? The RS4 has a stock oil coolder and we don't?

What sort of money is the oil cooler as a retro fit mod? Should we be looking to use 0W40 oil but fit oil coolers due to our tuning not alter the oil?

Graham, the rs4 has a decent oil cooler (it sits below the water radiater) but the S4 just has the basic water-oil cooler.

With oil, it depends on usage, but tuned cars get harder use: bla bla bla.

So was that 10W60, 5W40, or 0W40????

rs4 kit is around 600 sovs new from vag-parts.... source a second hand unit, mine was 200... with a split pipe ...! another 70 on top...

The grade and viscosity of oil enable lubrication and protection at different factors.... ie... turbo/non turbo cars, remember that the oil your using in your engine IS the bearing on the bush type turbo's, k03&k04's, the oil centres the shafts and is therefore yr bearing race as to speak, so you dont want the oil breaking down and you burning the bushes,
why you need to change reguarly in performance cars, not a factor of changing oil coz you got a cooler...
I used the Total 9000 oil too, still use it i mean...... k04's..... oil cooler..... been running quite cool over winter, but will creep up to 120's soon for sure....
