Gents

Does anybody know if the engine / gearbox mounts can be replaced with the engine still in situ or is it a complete engine out job ???

I suspect mine are getting a bit weak and sloppy as I'm getting transmission / engine thump when changing gears or rolling off the throttle after acceleration

Cheers

Mike

Had a similar problem with my car, turned out it was the front mount for the rear diff it had aged and gone soft, no tears or splits but just soft after 8 years getting slowly cooked by the exhaust.

check to see if there are any marks on the underside of the body as it can get so bad that the diff hits the underside of the car on gear changes or quickly getting on or off the throttle. Garage spotted it on a service and its about £100 to replace, theres a full write up on changing it Audiworld i think.

I'll bear that in mind, I'll take a look when it goes in for it's MOT on friday and see if there's anything obvious around the rear diff as I had the oil seals done on it last september

Grizz had told me that the engine mounts can be replaced with the engine in-situ, don't remember him saying anything about the gearbox mounts though.

Doesn't the DTS sort that out? Improved mine a whole load.

Mike,

After stripping my old one I would say they can be done in situ. Just drop the subframe a little and you should be able to replace them. Job would be a whole lot easier on a ramp of course.

Would be interested to experience this knock as I don't know if mine is the same way. Mine seems to have a bit of 'take up' when coming off the clutch a bit quick (although I don't know how much of that is standard due to quattro) and it's got the APR snub mount on.

I had the engine and gearbox mounts replaced with RS4 ones.

Doug at MRC did them - definitely in-situ but not a quick job. Gearbox ones are much easier than the engine ones.

John, It was present when we did that logging the other weekend, I thought I mentioned it at the time.

On a slightly different note I seem to recall somebody mentioning that the mounts are oil filled on the S4 is this correct or am I going mad

They are fluid filled. IIRC Audi refer to them as 'hydro mountings' or somenting like that.

Both my S4 engine mounts are leaking and I am thinking of replacing them (and the gearbox mounts) with 034 street mounts, has anyone used these mounts?
are they better than the RS4 ones?

Cheers, Nigel :)
