Are you selling or keeping ?

Post by DavidT » Fri Dec 15, 2006 7:12 pm

We have an amazing mix of owners in here, some new, some seem to have been here forever and some are just plain old ;)

We also have a mix of aspirations ranging from tuning for maximum power or track performance to un-modified cars, some in concours condition.

So I wondered, do you intend to keep your cars for the long term and make them second/project cars etc. or are they just going to be around for a year or two?

I'm keeping mine for the forseable future. Already had it for 3 years.
Not got any ££ to upgrade to an RS4, or to mod my S.
The wife drives it most of the time now as she doesn't like driving the T4, and she only potters about in it, so hopefully all will last well! (except when she drives it down pot holes  )

I was toying with the idea of selling as you know... but with the turbos going I thought what the hell lets max it out. Having gone from a pre-facelift B5 to a facelift one, the newness of the facelift wore off in a few weeks and the same old heavy steering, heavy clutch general 1990's feel of the car shone through.

I love the B5... its look, the performance of the B5 - the lot... its just a shame it cant be that tiny bit more refined. I will be taking my 2.7T into a newer chassis... watch this space. For now though, assuming the motor holds together for a year or so I will keep the B5 and love every day of owning her :)

I have been giving this some thought lately.....I have had my 2000 facelift coming up for 2 years.....I bought it with 40k miles and it is now just north of 50k miles...recent mot and Goodyear F1's......it is spot on! :)

I have considered a B5 Rs4, but for similar mileage I will need to spend another £15k and then I will buy a car which may have problems to sort, plus I have known my S4 known since new, other factors such as the anonymous stealth aspect of the S4 all weigh in it's favour.

Thankfully the cost to change isn't so much a problem rather than hard to justify,,,,,,I could buy a caterham or elise with the difference,,,but then i already have a perfect trackday porker and classic drophead for sunny sunday pub lunch runs...

I have considered an MRC remap for the S4, but then again it is currently £280 a year comp insurance and I do 5k miles a year..

Having gone through all of the above, I will probably just keep the car, it is becoming like an old pair of favourite shoes :)

I figure the depreciation over the next 3 years is minimal by which point a B7 RS4 will be available at sensible money.

I'll keep mine until I have funds and have made my mind up what I want next. Hope to keep it for at least a few more years.

I was wondering the other day how the forum will change over time as the cars become more available (cheaper)

David, it's time you strip yours and get some RS4 panels fitted, you know you want to!

With respect to the forum changing over time, I imagine more of the cars get modded.
If the turbos go and you need to spend the neccesary, perhaps some of the lower end cars will be broken for spares...while those worth keeping will get K04's and a remap plus everthing else that tends to occurr once you are on the slippery slope of modding :)

Well I've had mine 4 years & 85,000 miles (116,000 total now) but it still thrills me to drive it. Keep spending money on it as well....starting think about changing the wheels for something a little bigger. Am going to keep it for another 12 months at least but with the price of 3 year RS6s getting down to 26K and RS4s being advertised at 16K it more difficult to stay true.

Have had mine just over two months now. Has given me alot of grief with niggly little bits and pieces here and there, has broken me and my pocket almost! More probs today as when trying to change air con accumulator bottle, one of the hoses just decided it would strip the threads it was so seized onto the bottle. Been told by my mate in the local Audi stealers, not another hose in the country so gotta go down the repair route once I get it off!

But apart from all that, I love the thing and it always brings a smile to my face on the open road, annhialating all the "lesser" powered modern cars! Breaks me to get out of it in the morning after arriving at work! Still, gonna keep it for as long as its good to me within reason! Dont intend to sell it, not unless I'm forced to... Totally standard for the moment. Putting in the 710N's tomorrow, after run and new coolant temperature senders. Maybe a chip next year and thats about it really. Just like it the way it is!!
There are 2 tools you need in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it moves and it should'nt, use the Duct Tape
If it doesn't move and it should, use the WD-40

Sorry to hear you are having some teething problems. Joys of owning a used car... but once you get over the little problems - you should enjoy many hours of happy motoring! The B5 S4 is a reliable work horse that offers GREAT enjoyment for relatively little money!! I hope all the niggles pass and you get onto months-years of enjoyment sooner rather than later!

Well, when I bought it I swore blind to myself that I'd keep it for a good few years... even went as far as justifying the avant over the saloon by using the "will av kids soon" line ;)

I then started to read the forum and all the threads on mods and decided I may have to undertake some of them (even though I, again, swore blind I wouldn't spend any unneccessary money on the car  )

But now, I've been tempted by the Noggy RS4 that may be up for grabs

But no I think... NO, I'm DEFINITELY gonna play sensible and keep the S4 for some years to come. It's got good mileage (just short of 90k), got all the extras bar the sat nav, looks good, drives good, and the wife likes it.

All I'll do is add a few mods on - alloys, brakes, springs, ARB, DTS, aluminium roof bars, RS4 bumper, RS4 spoiler, K04's RS4 ic... oh oh, guess I'm going to have to break the promise of not spending unneccassarily  :D
01 RS4, Milltek, Dahlback Racing rears, RS6 fronts and a few bits to be added.

Also, as I hate driving, my toy to play with - a Honda CBR F Sport

Well i've owned mine for 2.5 years now. I also told myself i wouldn't spend any money on it as it would be fast enough....Then i got the bug and i've spent a fair bit. I love it, it's a wicked car and suprises many people when you take off  . I will keep it for a very long time, may never sell it. I'll stick with my S 8)
Hmmm, its fast but is it fast enough!!!
