Creepy. That's the one I just had changed.

I think the o/s front is gone as well. It's hard to tell because it comes up through the pedal, so your brain is always going to think it is this one playing up.

I got my wife to listen very carefully to where the noise was coming from. It took several attempts, but she is also convinced it is coming from the front o/s.

I'm booking it in to get it looked at.

Grizz - Is the procedure the same for the fronts?

Maybe because it is at the rear of the car and gets more crud on it, and is the oposite side to the exhaust which dries the NS quicker.

:bash: :bash: :bash: and double :bash:

I just went to pay the bill for the cv joint change and I told the mechanic that I would like the front offside looking at because it was still doing it. I mentioned that I thought it was odd for 2 to go at the same time, especially 2 on the same side of the car.

He said "What do you mean? I changed the rear nearside one"

Doh! He got the wrong one!

These are exchange parts, and the old one has gone back, so it'll cost me for a new one. To his credit, he has offered to do the right one with no labour charge, so I guess I can't complain too much.

He did say that the one he took off looked in a bad way with scuffs and scrapes on the ring, so he had no cause to question if he had the right one. I guess the nearside one would have gone eventually, so it's not too bad that it's been done.

Do you have to buy the CV joint, cant you just get a new sensor ring?

I'll be really pissed if you can. I got 2 quotes for the work and both of them agreed that the ring is firmly attached to the joint. One guy quoted on the basis of a detachable ring , but he called me later to say that the ring is not for sale on its own.

My local mechanic charged me about £80 plus VAT for an exchange rear CV joint.

Update for you all.

Tired to log wheel speeds with VAGCOM, but it appears to loose coms after about 20kph, so that is a no-go.

My next plan it to log straight from the CAN line, I just need to wait for someone from the office to return from a test in Italy with our test equipment. I will let you know how I get on.

Been 11 years but just realised I had not updated on this.

Vagcom would show a lower wheel speed on the rear left at low speeds only. Turned out that the ABS ring on the rear left was corroded. A new CV joint/hub, can't recall which fixed the problem,
