RS4/RS6 Hybrid conversion 99% done....

Post by tartan_rob » Mon Jul 17, 2006 11:15 pm

I'm not long back from MRC where Doug kindly fitted RS4 downpipes...

Mihnea did his thing with the laptop again and after 2/2.5 hours we had made little progress but plenty of head scratching. In a bid to resolve the surging he disabled lambda correction (Mihnea - jump in when I start talking poo) :? . The car turned into a complete animal with the manners of the queen  . What a difference, she is pulling good timing, running smoothly, no surging and no bad off throttle jumping.....I'm taking the car for a gas analysis in August to see how she'll cope with an MoT without Lambda, that gives Mihnea time to research the Lambda issue.

As for performance, I have not really done any measurements but before I got there, she ran approx 140 up the hill...remember that was before Lambda turned off and car is running better now.....FATs time was very approx 3.5sec....not bad for a 1.9Tdi :D

I'll try and post some times this weekend....

Meant to say, now the turbo's spool very similiar to the K03's....but a tad more boost and holding to red line.

I had a look at the ebay aution of your car and thought it was a cracking car, the auction disappeared, now i know why. :D

I really would like a S4/RS4 one day soon, even more so after seeing PhilT's at the 'Ring(glad you got the pads sorted ;) )

Could i be cheeky and ask if you're in the old town area any time soon (after it's all up and working properly) could i blag a lift in it, to see what a sorted S4 can do :)

Infact i haven't been out in a S4/RS4 yet

Mark - I am running std RS4 downpipes with std 200cell cats. These seem to have done the trick and have not made much difference on noise either which is bonus. She sounds very nice.....

austinpowers - I am not in old town but would be happy to give you a run sometime or would be happy to offer my advice (for what it is worth) when you come to buy? What are you driving just now?

Rob how would your engine cope with knocks , maf issues if there is no lambda protection.
Also why has removing lambdas allowed such improvement. Maybe your knock sensors are no longer tuned to your cars changes?

Is it safe for me to simply un plyg my Lambdas and log?

lambdas are mainly for emissions anyway. not much safety control on them unlike maf map egt and kv

I bet you would get cel trying to disconnect lamdas. I think Mihnea turned them off with software but I think he will turn them on again for MPG and such.

G, thanks for avoiding such statements which clearly indicate you don't know what I have done, nor why, nor what it does imply. Disabling lambda control (not the sensors) does not disable knock control!!!!

This was a temporary fix, I now have a permanent fix that doesn't disable lambda control.

On a slight tangent knock sensors are not tuned to a particular car. Knock detection is done by detecting a 6.4-5 Kilohertz sound wave. This is pretty much universal across all petrol internal combustion engines. Tuning a car won't change this value.

Tuning it badly might mean your more likely to be affected by it.....

I also hold MRC in the highest regard, without question.

Mihnea I Certainly never meant to annoy anyone, I sincerely hope that I have not.

I am asking questions all over the shop as I am in "Dire <beep>" with my own car, I cant understand my own issues and was asking TR for some info regarding the solving of his issues, to try if at all possible to replicate.

It is obvious now that Knock and timing are not effected by lambda but lambda is a further protection, Damned Stupid effort on my behalf, I know, but I have run out of common sense Ideas so I'm onto trying the Ridiculous.

Please forgive me If I have used the Word "Tuned" and mapping was interpreted. I simply am trying through discussing other's issues to get a better understanding. I am not trying to annoy any one.

Good to know you are finding solutions for the issues our cars are throwing. Together through discussion we will get there, but at the moment it feels like a million miles away for me. (End of Crying for 5 minutes.)

Kayge : No tangent this was the question I was trying to ask. How do the Knocks Work, well answered. Thanks.

Right Ill shut up now learned a little more. Glad you car is nearly there Tartan Rob.
