I have been thinking... S4 1/4 Times...

So yes... its been a hard day - I have been thinking...
I have always been interested in how cars perform over the 1/4 - its in many ways a good indication of a cars performance... yet the S4's this does not seem to be the case.
The trouble I have had (And currently have) with my S4 sees it not giving much power after idling for a while/being parked up (EG: Being in a queue to do a 1/4).
I am confident my car(If it has not been stationary for a while) can take an M3 from start to 150+... yet I got a 15sec 1/4...
DavidT with +/- 450BHP did a 13.2
yet
BRETTCOLLINS with 370BHP did a high 12's
& I have seen vids of simply chipped & exhausted S4's do VERY low 13's...
Now we have the discussion going on about under bonet temps... and I think this would have a lot to do with us not really performing as well as we should on the 1/4 - well certainly me...
Anyone ever given any of this any thought?

Bretts car does 370 at the wheels. Davids car is similar spec to mine around 330-340 at the wheels. Brett is a wee little chappie and if I remember correctly David is more like me, big boned (apologies to David if I'm talking <beep> again).
So Brett has 30-40 Bhp more power and a weight advantage. Brett pulled a 12.8 but he should be faster than that but my calculations he should be low to mid 12s. I think once he gets a clutch that works well he'll get those sort of times.
30 hp and 100lbs in weight is .4 second accross the 1/4. Puts David at 13.2 secs. So the figures make at least ballbark sense.
To put Davids 1/4 mile time into perspective, thats as fast a Ferrari 360 spider and faster than a modern Porsche Carrera 4.
You should be in the high 13s.....to ge a chipped S4 into genuine low 13s it needs to running high octane race gas and tuned for it. 380+ BHP.

my car runs basically the same set up as david t i myself am of the big boned variety 24 stone to be exact and my car ran a 12.7 no weight advantage in my corner

Dont remember where I saw the post - but I thought BRETT said he had JUST the K04's running about 370BHP & he ran a high 12 - before he went full RS4 (Intercoolers injectors etc) - I could be talking absolute nonsense though of course...

It seems that lightly modded MG's can get low 14's. A totally standard ZS180 hatch got
~14.7. These things are meant to be 170'ish BHP standard but are admittedly light
at ~1200kg.
However, I think a chipped S4 (even a standard one) should at least walk these things.
I guess it must be down to the driver
Thinking about it, I can get very low 5's 0-60 and high 4's FATS (which is ~60 - 90) which
means I should be ~12secs 0-100. Surely that would be enough to get in the 13's?
How much do you think technique factors into this? I would have said a lot.

Ash thats a really good time, remind me to stay clear of you at the traffic lights. Puts you around 440Bhp.

I would love to see you on the 1/4 ROB!! You should get your car to TOTB this weekend coming... crack 11's!!
Next time I do a 1/4 I am going to have the hood up in the queue and water at the ready for the rad and intercoolers. Also have the afterrun pump mod sorted.

Beware with dousing cars I/Cs and radiators, marshalls see any fluids dripping they probably won't let you run. My mates Scooby with Intercooler misters used to get pulled out reguarly at Santa Pod. Technique is to wait until last minute and make sure marshall sees you do it. Bonnet up definetly....never sure whether to have car on tickover or start and stop engine.

Correction: I did 13.1 with 400-420bhp. I run less than 1.4 bar of boost - 20psi and it tails off quickly from 6k rpm.
Also, I did it all wrong because I spun the wheels in first which made the upchange to second slow and difficult to judge. Watch the vid, it shows this clearly.
I've done a few starts with VAG-COM since, which although only an estimate, shows big gains are possible by starting at 3k rpm and slipping the clutch until the torque kicks in, then changing quickly to second at say 6.5k. This is what Brett suggested, I should have taken his advice.
I would have less than a 3/4 tank of fuel next time and less stuff in the boot too! I did nothing to help the times really.
So the time in my car is 12.5 I expect, 12.7 absolute minimum.

Yep, thats the same launch technique I use and I recorded a 12.8 in the damp earlier this year. I think mine should go bit faster maybe 1 or 2 tenths. I'll be happy if I hit mid 12s. Until the big turbos get installed off course....

Sorry people on been on line for a couple of weeks, Motorcbike crash. don't you just love middle age women doing u turns with out looking.
Have run 12.5 in my car with about 380bhp at the flywheel. was at TOTB last year.
Problem that I am having now is that that car is running somewhere near 480bhp at the flywheel, and the clutch is not upto the job. with No launch can till run a 12.6 1/4. the car now has so much torque, if you launch it the clutch will slip in 2nd and 3rd...

I managed a 13.045 at the pod a few weeks back, and it was feckin hot and i fluffed a change a bit.On a cool day i dont think there would be to much bother getting sub 13. My cars on K04s,MRC map, standard exhaust with gutted precats, standard ICs and injectors etc etc.
On a seperate not has no one got a sticky going wth 1/4 mile times on it?
