Water in footwell - problem found.

Post by KayGee » Thu Jul 06, 2006 4:18 pm

My car had considerable puddle in footwell this morning...cause:

ECU weather protection box has a drain channel running along the underneath that had become blocked and rain water had filled the area and overflowed the rubber bung and dripped down where I fed the boost gauge feed through the bonnet pull grommet.

Removed the ECU and weather protection box and cleaned out the area. Probably pulled out two or three good handfulls of old leaves, twigs and other debris.

Silicone sealed the boost pipe hole also.

Anyone with a pre facelift should look at this as tyhey don't have the plastic firewall cover, which probably helps keeping the crap out of this area.

Tools: 8mm socket, 10mm socket, 10mm deep socket or 10mm spanner, 1/4" ratchet. For cleaning hooky tool, paint brush.

45 mins to do the necessary. If you want it spotless would take longer.

4 or 5 8mm bolts holding on ECU cover (depends whether rear bolt was ever replaced).
Remove retaining spring.
Unclip ECU.
2 10 mm nuts holding weatherproof cover to inside of firewall. 1 external to box, 1 internal (has plastic clipon cover, use pliers to ease off). Needs deep socket or 10mm spanner.
Lift rear of weatherproof cover (on neoprene gasket) slide back and up clip front rubber bung.
Disconnect 5 colour coded electric plugs.
Unhook wiring harness, which slides into front of cover in U shaped slot.
Slide out the weatherproof box.

Clean out the crap, wipe clean and replace in reverse order. Took me 20 mins to clean the crap out. Make sure you do the back bit by the windscreen motor as well whilst your their. I stuffed the hole by the elictical car connections with rag to stop the debris falling into the under dash area.

Refit in reverse order.

KayGee,

Excellent post. I had this probelm with my old tdi a couple of years ago. Exactly the same problem but it took me condsiderably longer to find the cause. It also takes ages and ages for the carpet and it's foam backing to dry out properly.

Mark,
Chances are you have the same problem and water is running down the car under the carpet to the rear.
You can have this problem for quite a while before you notice it as it takes a lot of water to soak up through the foam and show itself on the carpet.

Yes, excellent post Kevin

Mark - there are a number of other causes - in my case, it was a poorly fitted windscreen - full replacement was the only cure.

Indeed, good post. Last year I found a puddle several inches deep below the battery, it was caused by leaves blocking the drain hole.....well done for bringing it up on the forum.
