B5 S4: Fuel Efficiency

Since we have frequently had questions about fuel usage, particularly in regard to MAF and other problems, and we also seem to be getting a steady influx of new members, I thought I'd start a simple database which people can refer to. I'm going to post a few weeks' worth of data for my car until I feel it is representative. If anyone else wants to, please feel free to add posts. If you add more data, please edit your first post rather than add a new one.

CliveH: Nice idea, but us "normal" members only have 30 minutes in which to edit a previous post.
Dippy: Isn't this enough?

200 miles ----- Optimax ---------- 18 -------------- 24 ---------- 0 miles --- 55l ------ 15% ----- 70% ----- 5% --------- 10%

Driving around town I see between 180 & 220 miles out of a tank - similar to that of my standard 2.8 Quattro I had previously.
On the motorway I see 350 miles out of a tank - better than my 2.8 Quattro I had previously.

All in all VERY happy with the economy I get out of the S4 given its performance. I have had cars with much lower BHP given similar/worse MPG!

RS4 Cats, Full Milltek exhaust, Forge DV's

RANGE ---------- FUEL ------ DIS av. mpg - DIS av. speed - DIS range - Refill - Stop/start - Urban - Motorway - High boost
340 miles ----- Texaco 95 --------31 -------------- 42 ----------0 miles --- 50l ------ 5% ----- 5% -----------------85% ---------5%

I drive mostly motorway miles and was very impressed with the mpg for such a high performance car having only owned it for 2 weeks. Not bad for two return trips from Bristol to Reading on the busy M4! A fair bit of the mileage was on the cruise control....maybe I just drive like a granny! My previous car could only manage 36mpg and that was only a 1.8 16v.

Miltek Dual Catback. Gutted Precats. MRC Custom remap. Stage 2+

180 ----- ---Tesco 99 RON --------15 --------------15 ----------0 miles --- 50l ------ 30% ----- 40% ------20% ---------10%

I do lots of local driving stuck in traffic stop / start driving. Unfortunately East London is just too busy. U get between 140 and 200 miles depending how much start stop driving i do. If im on the motorway, I usually do half a tnak in one go, which usually gives me about 130 miles as i do put my foot down as i have an opportunity to. Cant hardly do that in traffic.

This is nice idea, but we should actually work out the MPG from the tank fill and distance travelled from the trip counter, so it makes more sense, Given that is what fuel efficiency is measured in. I average 22.5 MPG I'll try and get some proper figures...

Better still, calibrate your DIS mpg, that's what I did.

I only just got my unmodified S4 a month ago. It's my first motor with an MPG trip computer, so seeing it disappear below 10MPG whenever i'm not in sixth gear has scared the hell out of me.... hence the healthy overall MPG!

Driving Miss Daisy? Probably! :?

Fuel economy

IS there any evidence that chipping/ new exhaust will improve fuel economy if driven the same as before the modifications? Or does Mr Brown just rub his fat hands together with glee at the extra tax!!

Typically if the engine gets torquier lower down the rev range then economy will improve, but equally it'll drink more juice on full chat as you ask the turbo's and injectors etc to work harder.

My old S4 which was remapped averaged 25 to the gallon, this stock one averages 23.4 mpg.

23.2 to the gallon worked out on clickoff to clickoff (full tank)....display says the same ish.... Only driven slowly out of Sheffield limits ....then driven 'quickly' on country roads.... not manic thrashing all the time! Used to commute once or twice per week max.

Merc 230 auto sits in traffic all the time and gets 21 mpg... wish that Audi build quality was like the Merc though!
