I think it is important to update this... since having the MRC500 conversion done I now get 170-180 miles out of a tank around town and upto 240 out of a tank on the motorway keeping a constant 70MPH off boost driving like a saint. A drastic change vs my 330+ out of my MTM chip, but apparently that is the price for performanceZeroK66 wrote:ZeroK66
MTM Chip upgrade, Miltek Single, Gutted pre-cats & New MAF
RANGE ---------- FUEL ------ DIS av. mpg - DIS av. speed - DIS range - Refill - Stop/start - Urban - Motorway - High boost
200 miles ----- Optimax ---------- 18 -------------- 24 ---------- 0 miles --- 55l ------ 15% ----- 70% ----- 5% --------- 10%
Driving around town I see between 180 & 220 miles out of a tank - similar to that of my standard 2.8 Quattro I had previously.
On the motorway I see 350 miles out of a tank - better than my 2.8 Quattro I had previously.
All in all VERY happy with the economy I get out of the S4 given its performance. I have had cars with much lower BHP given similar/worse MPG!

Sounds like your DIS needs calibrating Adam - 230+ miles from a tank will be returning you over 19mpg...

Ow. No. Best way to deal there, if possible is to literally only idle if you can, just using various gears. Standstill's always standstill, and we'll always consume more than a 1.8 there, but acellerating, we can consume even more. Idling in 6th though, is 20 miles per hour. You end up leaving lots of room, since you're not accelerating as fast as everyone else, but you're rarely more than idle. Helps a lot if the traffic is that stop-start but mostly moving.
I've got 470 miles off one tank. I followed lorries on the motorway for the entire, boring tank. It was safer than the traffic that was yoyoing between 70(ish) and 20(ish), with the sun behind so that I couldn't make out whether brake lights were lit. It's rather good for fuel economy.

I've done about 6K in 19 months. 168 miles to a tank would be very bad it it wasn't about a months worth! Took it for a run today to blow the cob webs away and get the battery back over 12volts
On a decent run even with giving it the full beans I easily get 21-25mpg and nearer 30 on a motorway run but the stop start fairly short journeys I end up doing are bad. I managed to get the mpg up to 14's here, but it does sink to 13's sometimes.

Re: B5 S4: Fuel Efficiency
I"d trust the clutch or pressure plate. But the Act clutch looks promising,I'll be looking into it closer as I have my new LW Fidanza flywheel just itching to go in.......good fine.
