Potential S4 replacement

After having my S4 for just over four years I am starting to wonder about what might be it's potential replacement. With a budget of low £20k and wanting to say german, it looks like an RS4 or E39 M5 (don't want an E46 M3 - they seem far to common) - anyone else been through this thought process? Unless test drives totally blow me away, I may even keep the S4 for a 5th year (unheard of for me, I'm normally totally bored and ready to move on after 2-3 years).

will let you know in about 3yrs!! :D
Not much help, but my ethos is "if it ain't broke, don't mend it".........

I was the same with Scoobs - had two in the space of 6 years. But as soon as I felt the need to change, I did. Hence my S4 :)

Dan :)

Passed on the M5, due to concerns about reliability. Seems M5s have a reputation for not working. Even saw one website with a bloke claiming he used his TVR more than the M5 since it was more reliable. Scary stuff.

Merc C32 AMG was my second choice. 350hp supercharged V6. Brakes to shame the S4. Nice car and discreet with it. 540 Sport another great car, handles well (with Sport pack), great noise from the V8.

The E39 M5 does seem to have major reliability problems perticularly relating to the Vanos (variable timing) system although think this relates to all M-powered cars. The BMW warranty is a must if your thinking about buying an M and AFAIK you cant buy a new Beemer warranty once it has lapsed.

The E46 m3 is a great motor but there are quite a few around - it would definitely be on my list.

Best advice is if in doubt - stick with what you know and keep the S4.

BMW have recented made major changes to their extended warranty terms. Much bigger premiums, age cut-offs and excesses etc. Something to consider as it used to be way better than Audi warranties but is now broadly inline or worse I think.

Yes, my mate has dropped his BMW warranty last year, due to the hike in premiums....

BMW 540i seems like a good, cheaper-to-run alternative to the M5. I believe they are all "Sport" too (the Sport suspension etc is standard on a 540i)

Your right - i believe the warranties on M cars can now be as high £1800/year - a joke considering Porsche do one for around £750. However when Ms break its big $$. Its a gamble really.
