Brake Fluid

Gents

What grade brake fluid are you using. I currently have std brake setup (which i assume is dot 4) and it is due for change.

I would like to go down the upgrade route (disc's and/or calipers) in the future but for now have to stick with the std setup

Having changed brake lines on most of my bikes in the past and noticed the differance partially down to the fact i've gone for goodridge lines and the fact i normally use dot 5 when i change.

I was wondering if this was a beneficial change due to the higher spec of dot 5

Cheers in advance

Mike

I guess you mean dot 5.1?

I'm due for a service soon and was wondering about the brake fluid? What difference do you get/feel using the dot 5 as most people seem to be using? are there any other brake fluids you can use that are better than the standard stuff?

Thanks.

I think even Castrol SRF is still DOT4.

:( I'm stuck with dot 4 until I change it. Bit of a misunderstanding between supplier and myself, I only discovered it was dot4 when it boiled over out of the tank.

What are the actual benefits of DOT5.1 over DOT4? I am currently running Pentosin Racing fluid at the moment which has only been in a couple of weeks, but I need to fit a new fluid reservoir later in the week and bleed them through again - I am all out of the Pentosin so may as well put 5.1 in if there is some gains.

I've seen dot4 bubble out of an rs6 and set fire to leaves and debris in the bulkhead, luckily I was armed with a bottle of fanta, that was cheaper for my pals to replace than the RS6. Was in the Ring carpark, a good few people hurried to move there motors out of fire fear :)

Holly smoke £40 per ltr (ish) for srf.
I read Ate's super blue is highly recommended, also the blue tint of the fluid makes bleeding brakes easy!
You can easily tell when you have flushed out the older fluid.

So what is the actual benefit of dot 5 over dot 4? is it just one can withstand more heat than the other? Are there any benefits in brake performance?

ATE Super Blue for me as well. Good stuff, works well and doesn't break the bank like SRF!

I think i'am right in saying that dot 5 has a higher boiling point but is also more hydroscopic ( Absorbs Moisture) so will require changing at more regular intervals.
Unless you use the car hard at trackday's i would stick with dot 4, that is what i have done.
