just had gear synchros changed and a short shift fitted , but its ever so notchy in 1st & 2nd gears , any ideas please

You could try adjusting the short shifter again, but to be honest they are pretty much all like that - many owners have reported not being able to select 1st when cold!

Probably not adjusted properly....have had mine adjusted a few times to get it just right. Shift should be tight and short but not notchy....at least not more than normal. Unable to select first gear when cold is not normal...

I only experience notchiness when the oil's cold. Goes away when warm.
There was definitely no increase in notchiness when my short-shifter was fitted, however there has been an increase (again, only when cold), after my AWE DTS was fitted. However the whole point of the DTS is to tighten the transmission so I suppose that's to be expected.

I had thought that the shifter was modified from early to later cars. Mine is a Jan 99 and 1st to 2nd has always been my least favourite aspect of the car. Even when properly warmed, 1st cannot be selected without double declutching above say 10-15mph. Been like it since new.
Having driven a 2001 RS4 it was much better.
The Tanoga I have certainly loosened up over the first few thousand miles and is better than the std. shift IMO. It improved again after the DTS was fitted (although drivetrain movement is still there!).

Mine is exactly the same. In fact when fitting the Tanoga we had a hell of job getting it to select reverse properly. Just got used to it now being a bit awkward. But to be honest it wasn't that great before Not the world's smoothest gearbox

i'm thinking of going short shift but neuspeed at 150 squid seems bit pricey when s2 shifts are 70 anyone fitted tanoga recent and how much and where from?
has anyone had regrets or is it something to percivere with.

no its one I bought that I dont need any more - the guy at Vast peformance is called Piggy ...Ive just got used to the standard shifting now..and to be honest, its my daily driver so Im not that bothered about doing quick 1/4 miles in it........!

this is also my daily runner. in your opinion would i be silly to fit one --- my goal is to crisp up the feel of the shift. or is this what i'm looking for?

dunno - never tried it...just got used to it how it is...and Im a numpty with the spanners so didnt fancy fitting it myself !

I've got a "Piggie" modified shifter in my S4. Fitted it myself without any trouble. I works well, and I'd recommend it, "Piggie" himself is very helpfull too.

Oh, if you do fit it yourself - make suer you have one of those magnetic pick-up tools for bolts and nuts etc as it's a PITA if you drop any into the car! I had one of those tools and it was a god-send!

Check out "toy guy" on Audiworld for his modified shifter, not at all notchy, blocked shifts in first and second are sorted, great job and not too pricey, money well spent.
