Siren noise!!!???

Only just noticed but I appear to have a noise similar to a distant police siren...I get this starting at around 1500 rpm.
Car runs fine...I seem to be getting 25+ MPG (standard) but there is this siren like whizzing/whoosh noise...not overpowering just there!

Having read through the forum I get the impression it could be a pipe leak, other than checking the DV's and "F" pipe is there anything else that may be the cause....or is this nothing to worry about?

Thanks for your wise words :)

I may be wrong but a siren type noise is usually associated with possible turbo wear  ........do a search using "siren".......

Is it more prevalent when the engine is cold?

does the siren take a few seconds to stop/slow down after engine turned off?

if so, one of front electric fans has failed or is jammed with a bit of cabling. makes one of the others go twice as fast, hence noise

ignore this if it does not happen as above...

Thanks for the replies chaps, It only appears on light acceleration, sounds like turbos spooling as they come in at 15-1800rpm....maybe normal....there are no noises on tick over or after the engine is turned off.
No oil is being used or signs of smoke, the engine rarely gets pushed above 3-3500rpm.

My turbos weren't noticeable until I put on DP's and catback now can here them clearly. Turbos sound like dentist drills when knackered.

In the words of the infamous VandyS4 (with regard to turbo failure): If you're not sure if you have the siren noise, you don't have it, it sounds like 10,000 screaming babies in the engine bay.

All turbos make a slight siren noise when spooling, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thanks, having also run a "siren search" on this forum, I have now concluded it is completely normal....just wondered, all part of learning about these cars.

Youre clearly not gettin the best out of your motor. When warm the engines designed to be driven hard.

As for turbo noise - youll know when theve blown

I enjoy the torque and never rev it really, characteristics of a lazy V8!
(i know it's a blown V6 :) )

Never thought the turbos were giving up, just wondered if it meant there was some pipe leak somewhere.

I must try to get the car on a Vag com diagnostic reader sometime, just for peace of mind

Mine's been doing it since I bought it 3 years/40000 miles ago. For the first few weeks I kept looking for the blue flashing lights.

One of my turbos whines. It's noticable when the engine is cold, but still present when warm. Starts at 1800 rpm then fades out at 3000 rpm.

Think I might start putting some money aside for when it decides to give up the ghost...
