Water Temp Guage

The water temp on my S4 Avant goes up normally when I start driving. Is it normal for it to go right back down again even during a long motorway journey or hard driving? Oil temp goes up as normal.

Some S4's develop problems with the water temp sensor over time resulting in an erratic temp gauge. Theres in an improved sensor part available (I have had it changed)

Can any garage fit the part for you?

Yes it is very straight forward. I believe the new sensor is green and the old one is black. If you are not going to Audi or a specialist, probably best to get the part from Vagparts and then have them fit it.

It's the G62 sensor. Costs around £20 I think. Easy to change - DIY job if you're so inclined.

Failure of G62 Sensor is very common, it's a 4-pin sensor. 1 pair is for the Temp. Gauge on the dash, other pair is engine Temp for ECU. When this pair fails the car won't start (from hot) as the ECU thinks the engine is cold and pumps in extra fuel. When it does eventually start there's loads of black smoke for a while.

My old (original) sensor was BLUE part No. 078 919 501 B
New sensor is dark green part No. 059 919 501

It's an easy job to change.
