possible power loss

Post by Bisonone » Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:06 pm

My car came back from it's service today, when they did a diagnostic check it came up with the following code: (17963) charge pressure-upper limit exceeded-engine.

My car has been re-mapped by A.M.D. The point i'm getting at is that since getting my car back today, it doesn't seem to have the same pick up/boost as it did before it went in!!! Would them sorting out the code possibly have done something to the re-map, or is it just me being paranoid :?

I had this on mine, after being mapped by AMD.
Could never solve it.
Your car will be in limp mode so only pushing 5psi
You need to clear the code for it to perform again.
I say ditch the remap and try another one.

Im not 100% sure on that ECU, but i think that code is thrown when the engine boosts more than the ECU has requested.

IMHO, limp mode (by the way, on a chipped car it is sometimes higher than 5psi - mine was 9psi) should not be due to the AMD remap, more likely to be caused by faulty MAF, BPV's, the dreaded TBB or a boost leak - have they left a pipe off?
Get it checked out !

How long has the car had the AmD Remap? Mine had the remap from AmD and had the same issue but it is difficult to prove the problem on the remap. Incidentally I never had to switch the ignition off to get out of limp mode - it reset itself whilst on the move.

I have an MRC custom map now and haven't experienced the problem since.

Guess you have to come to your own conclusions. One thing's for sure, I don't have any scary moments when I need some boost.

I had limp mode once and the limit was about 6 psi. My car is remapped too. Of course I'm certain that this limit could be changed during remap if the tuner wishes to.

The DTC in question is not more boost than demanded, but more boost than the maximum limit allowed. This would certainly cause limp mode.

The protection for the upper limit is provided by the wastegates which are controlled by the ECU via the N75 valve. Has this ever been messed with?

I'm with Nige - don't blame the remap, it will be due to a real fault. Your experience proves how unhelpful dealers can be. As a minimum you should phone AmD, but undoubtedly they'd need to see the car themselves.

I wasnt blaming the remap by AMD. I guess a leak on the N75 pipes or something might cause this code to appear. Or that the max limit within the ECU isnt set high enough?? I dunno, i cant read or write the software, i just download it into the ECU and check all is fine.

I phoned A.M.D today and they said that it would not have anything to do with the re-map.

They say that it could be a split hose, diverter valves, or Maf.

If it was the maf wouldn't it have come up with a different code? I don't think it is the maf for some reason. I'm thinking more air/boost leak???

Does anybody know anywhere closer to Leicester than A.M.D in Oxford, i could take it to get it checked out and tested.

The Audi specialist i go to doesn't have a pressure tester. So i asked how he would check for leaks etc.. he said diagnostics check and looking and listening. Without sounding dumb- would that be enough to find a split hose or diverter problem???

Any help appreciated,

Thanks, D. :beerchug:

diverters are easy to test. pull the small hose off and suck the nipple!!!! if it holds vacuum then its ok. if not then buy some new ones. check the part numbers, if they are NOT 710N then chances are they are shot. You cant find leaks very easily without pressure testing kit, unless you have a RR.

Really needs a good garage with diagnostic kit to find it if it isnt DV's. You can check the MAF readings to make sure they arent too low. MAF's are common failures, but im not sure that they give that fault code

Where are you based? You need someone with Vagcom, post the logs and we'll diagnose the issue.

I'm starting to think along them lines now. I'm taking her on a trip to southampton tomorrow so i'll see how she goes, and take it from there. I tightened up a few clips tonight on my bailey rdv's as a couple seemed loose and it seemed better, like i said i'll find out tomorrow on a long drive.

Thanks for your help

I work in Corby in Northampton - it's not taht far from Leicester - quick dash across the A47 - we could meet up. Happy to help you out with my VAG COM if you want. I also have two spare, brand new 710N DV's we could try out if you want.

Let me know.
