B6 wheels on a B5 S4 (with pictures)

Post by ajsl » Wed May 11, 2005 10:35 pm

After much indecision on my part about getting some new wheels, I finally decided to put a set of B6 S4 wheels on my B5 S4. After all the good advice I got here I thought I'd post a bit of a summary of how it went (and include prices).

I sourced the wheels direct from Germany via a contact I got from Gavsteryoung here, the chap doesn't want to be named here but is happy to be contacted directly, PM Gav or myself for his details.

I got a set of 4 brand new B6-S4 wheels, centre caps, and tyres (235/40x18 Continental Sport Contacts) for approx €1200 (about £820) delivered to Scotland. They took about a (nervous) week to arrive from Germany. I had also considered S8 wheels, but they where much more expensive!

I also got two sets (they come two to a set) of Eibach 5mm spacers, and a set of 33mm bolts (standard B5 S4 bolt is 28mm) from philipwalker here on the forums via his company P W Motorsport for around £95 delivered. Phillip was really helpful, and went out of his way to sort me out with the correct bolts (I've still got a set I need to send back to him - sorry about that Philip!).

After all that I changed the wheels myself, which was pretty easy. The hardest part was getting the stock front wheels off as they'd pretty much seized onto the hubs! I torqued all of the wheel bolts to 89 lb/ft using a torque wrench and was good to go. A couple of days later I went around again and re-torqued them all again (as it happened they were all still ok).

A couple of things about the pictures, they're low quality jpegs (to reduce the download times), and also my car was filthy when I took them. This makes the new wheels look very shiny compared to the bodywork, but in fact the finish on the B6 wheels is the same as the stock wheels.

This is a B6 wheel on the car with a B5 wheel against it, besides the size, the key difference is the angular indents on the spokes.

Here's a pic of the hub assembly with the spacer on:

Shot from the back, trying to show the wider track. The wheels don't really stick out that much more despite the 0.5" wider rims and 5mm spacer.

The ride is good, road noise is definitely louder, and overall I'm really pleased with the result.

I plan to sell my set of stock wheels, which should fetch around £300(ish) so the B6 wheels/tyres will end up costing me around £620(ish) :)

Thanks for all the help (direct or indirect) here at the forums.

Cheers.

Looks good. Not sure whether to go with 235/40 or 225/40 18's myself.

Well seeing you got the ball rolling I will add my pics, very poor ones I took this morning, car needs a good buffing! LOL

Got my wheels and tyres from the same contact as AJSL mentions above... although my 18inch AVUS came shod in Dunlop SP rubber....

Anyhow they really change the look of the car, and also help out the handling, yes there is more road noise but the comfort of the ride is not effected.

I am still in need of some longer bolts and 5mm spacers, at the moment I have some dodgy cheap 3mm ones..... :?

Here are some pics....

I was going to wash it... honest ;) but it seemed a bit silly to wash it while I was putting the wheels on !

For a newbie, why do you need spacers to fit the b6 wheels?

It seems dependant on year but my S4 needs them as the front wheels would not even turn. The wheel was tight against the brake caliper. The rears looked like they may just fit without, but there was barely any clearance. I thought at speed the tyre might expand and rub.... 3mm spacers would be perfect, but these are not available in hubcentric form, well not that I can find without paying MTM's silly prices.... so 5mm are the smallest available....

I understand the earlier S4 with the older style caliper does not seem to need spacers.

I think these new AVUS are 7.5 instead of 7inch wide, but it could be 8inch......

Nice photos. But they remind me of how much better the S4 looks when lowered...

I think the B6 wheels really suit the B5 S4, they are a little less angular looking and fit the car's lines, especially on a silver car.

Does that make sense or am I talking B******s ?

I think they make any S4 look better..... and there better than the RS4 reps on the S4....... a bit more rare.....

But agree with Dippy, the car needs some lowering...... I mean the wifes tigra has a smaller gap between the tyres and arch and thats not a sports car!

Damn :audibash:

Not for me I am afraid. I dont think they quite suit the B5 design....same feeling I get with the RS6 style wheels...IMHO these look better on newer cars.... But the car defo needs lowering
